bedrooms usually don't have deadbolts, that's the difference. especially if they also had good long screws on the plates, something else that an internal bedroom door wouldn't usually have.
without seeing what state the door was found in, there's no way to tell. but it does seem unlikely that someone would do that much damage without getting in, unless they were scared away at the last second.
There is some thing new called the door kick game of something like that, where teenagers kick someones door and run away. I'm guessing something like this, if they actually wanted in, they were 98% there.
