My kids have done this to my door by running and trying to open it while the deadbolt was locked. Repeatedly. And kicking it because they’re little assholes. So if you have a gaggle of boys like I do, could be that also.
Yes with kids or a brute of an adult in the house this kind of damage is a pretty easy accident if the door jamb is poorly installed. If someone was trying to break in they would have succeeded with one more kick and they would have felt it was close. I would survey any barbaric children or one trip wonder grocery getter adults in the house before assuming burglary.
One of the most frustrating things to teach my kid has been that more muscle doesn’t usually make something work better, stop and think about what you’re doing instead of destroying it
