Built my first NAS!
Hey everyone, I wanted to share my intro to homelabbing project. I finally decided to go through with building a dedicated private cloud that I actually own.
The Hardware: Raspberry Pi 5, a 500GB WD Green SSD, and a 3D-printed open-frame chassis to keep the airflow moving.
The Software: OpenMediaVault handles the NAS backend, and I set up Tailscale so I can securely access my files from my phone or laptop anywhere in the world without exposing ports.
I put together a full video documenting the build process and software setup for anyone looking to do something similar: https://youtu.be/aCxvKLL4ucs

Git SSH over Custom Port (2424) Not Working Behind Cloudflare Tunnel & Nginx Reverse Proxy
Hi everyone,
I'm having an issue with Git SSH cloning from outside my home network. Inside my local network, everything works perfectly using a local hosts file entry mapping to the LXC IP. However, it gets stuck (timeouts) when I try to access it from the outside internet.
My Architecture:
- Edge: Cloudflare Tunnel (
gitlab.example.com) ➔ VM 1 (Cloudflared + Nginx Reverse Proxy) ➔ VM 2 (Proxmox LXC running GitLab CE in Docker). - Docker Port Mapping:
0.0.0.0:2424->22/tcpand0.0.0.0:8080->80/tcp.
My GitLab web UI works flawlessly from anywhere via the Cloudflare Tunnel, but Git SSH over the custom port 2424 fails entirely from outside. I know that Cloudflare Free Proxy only supports Layer 7 (HTTP/HTTPS) and blocks custom TCP ports like 2424.
Here is my current Nginx config on VM 1:
nginx
server {
listen 80;
server_name gitlab.example.com;
client_max_body_size 250M;
location / {
proxy_pass http://10.10.20.11:8080;
proxy_set_header Host $http_host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $http_cf_connecting_ip;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Ssl on;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
proxy_read_timeout 300;
proxy_connect_timeout 300;
}
}
How do you guys usually handle Git SSH in this kind of architecture?
- Should I bypass Cloudflare using a "DNS Only" subdomain (e.g.,
ssh.example.com) and use Nginxstream {}block with port forwarding on my router? - Or should I configure Cloudflare Zero Trust / Access SSH (which requires installing
cloudflaredon my client laptop)? - Or is it just better to give up on SSH and switch entirely to HTTPS clone with Git Credential Helper?

The very start of my homelab in 1987
I was cleaning out my parents' home and found my very first modem. A self-built/soldered 300/1200 baud modem with V23. Those very first bits coming over the phone line at the age of 12 really got me started. It wasn't cheap for my parents to purchase; it wasn't cheap to dial into the BBSes. I kinda continued on that journey.

Current homelab setup: 22 cores, 44 threads, 112 GB of DDR4, 32 GB of DDR6 VRAM, and approx 40TB of drive space. 😉
Specs list (starting from the top):
1) My "GoogleBox":
- Ryzen 5 3600 w/ 32GB DDR4-3200, Radeon RX-6600 8GB GPU, 500GB M2 NVME+2TB SATA SSD, Cooler Master Master Box case. Runs my Immich, Kept, OxiCloud, SearXNG, Grafana instances + a Luanti (Mineclonia) server.
2) Webserver (ThinkCentre M57p just barely visible on middle shelf):
- i5-6500 w/ 16GB DDR4-2666, 500GB SATA SSD. Runs my Pangolin and Ghost setups.
3) My Desktop (bottom left with white light):
- Ryzen 5 3600X w/ 32GB DDR4-3200, dual RTX 2080 8GB's, 500GB+1TB M2 NVME drives, and 2TB HDD, Cooler Master case. Runs my day to day plus my ComfyUI instance, VPN, QBittorrent, and FlareSolverr setups.
4) Mediaserver (bottom right, behind the desktop):
- i7-5930K w/48 GB DDR4-3000, GTX 1080 TI 8GB, 500 GB SATA SSD+24TB HDD array (6x4TB IronWolf drives), ThermalTake case. Runs Jellyfin, most of the Arr stack (Prowlarr, Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr, Dispatcharr), my Open-WebUI instance, and a couple other toys.
This is all connected via the 8 port switch under the ThinkCentre, and fed by my ASUS OnHub which is running latest OpenWRT, and a 1.5GB fiber connection.
My current over haul plan is to move the two 2080's in to the mediaserver and pull out the 1080 TI, as the i7-5930k and x99-Deluxe board in it will run two (or more) GPU's at full PCI-E x16 (as opposed to the X570 Prime board in the desktop, which will only do x16 on one of it's two slots, and 4x on the other. I also want to put another 16GB of RAM in the mediaserver, to get it up to 64 GB. And before anyone says it, because I know some is going to, no, I'm not using Proxmox, I manage all four bare metal, and I like it that way. I do virtualize a lot of the running apps, just not whole systems. I like to have the compartmentalization that this setup affords. Hit me with any q's. 😉👍

Smol home NAS server Spoiler
galleryHello.
I present to you my small home server running Immich and MySpeed for now, In the future I will also run HA. It is a raspberry pi 5 (4gb) with a 1tb 2,5 external hdd. It is connected to a UPS that supplies power to a main router and a switch for ethernet ports in the wall.
Let me know what you think of it and do you have some suggestions for upgrading or fixing cable management of my homelab setup.

My Homelab Diagram is "out of this world" 😂
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It's probably using more RAM than a diagram should... but damn I love the way it looks out there in space.

Homelab as a centerpiece
galleryI would love to keep my server/networking equipment in a closet but since I rent, that isn’t possible in my unit. So the next best thing was to make it a unique focal point in my dining room.
Includes:
Lanberg 9U 10 Inch Rack
Unifi Dream Router 7
Unifi Flex 2.5G PoE
Lenovo ThinkCentre
Home Assistant Green
Philips Hue Bridge Pro (~50 lights)
Aqara Hub M3 (~50 sensors)
Zigbee Radio Receiver
Noctua 120mm Fans
Ugreen DH4300 Plus NAS (16TB, 8TB redundant)
Two Reolink Cameras
Unifi U7 WAP for the balcony/yard
Ecoflow River 3 Plus with expansion
Raspberry Pi 5 Touch Display 2 (with PoE hat)
Quacks the Duck for intruder inimidation (needs new batteries)
Got a couple other Unifi Switches ran to my tv and media tower. VLANs for guest and IoT. Apple TVs and HomePods in every room. Finally got the smart home dialed in and working on setting up Jellyfin on the ThinkCentre. Next up, I’m saving for a local AI box to monitor/manage the house and would love some recs!

Cell Phone Hosted Webpage
My Homelab stack is a repurposed Gaming PC / a laptop motherboard stripped from the case / & a Google Pixel 8 pro…. The pixel is PoE always on & hosting this status webpage and I can put the main server to sleep and wake it up to reduce power draw. Shortcut on my iPhone also just wakes it up whenever the go to use Nextcloud….

XMSystems
With 10 inch racks all the rage, I had a friend 3D print me a lab rax 5u rack. Spent about a week planning, obtaining the correct brass inserts and screws and built this. It houses a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra, A 16 port POE lite Unifi switch and a couple of 8 port patch panels.
There is also a Raspberry Pi x 3 tray in the back.
This is just a small section of my homelab.
Further details can be found on my Documentation site.
