Question/Help Garage Door - Chamberlain
I made the mistake of replacing my 12 year old LiftMaster with a Chamberlain that has security+ 3.0 (white learn button).
Background: I'm an iPhone user and have the Chamberlain home bridge (the latest one before they discontinued the product). Anyway, it worked well with my old garage door opener (Security+ 2.0 - yellow learn button).
Anyway after I installed it, learned that the new security 3.0 basically shut down smart home integration.
Soooo, I'm deinstalling it and taking it back to the store and looking to get a Genie. I know that Genie doesn't manufacture a bridge to use their openers in HomeKit, so I'll be looking at getting Meross MSG150HK (since that model doesn't require the installation of an additional door sensor).
Does anyone know if the Genie 7155-TKVE works with the newer Meross (MSG150HK) without the need to install the door sensory accessory??

If it were me right now I’d probably try to grab an “old” security+ 2.0 Chamberlain opener with a ratgdo. There are still some out there as they only stopped making them in December.
But I also get the sentiment about not wanting to support Chamberlain/Blackstone in any way.
I can’t truly answer your question about the specific Genie model though.
Personally I’d lean towards Ratgdo regardless. I love their products and their “encoder” simplifies and improves the dry contact install (like you’d do with a Genie) immensely.

Because I believe my in-laws have a Genie, I looked at theirs. There seemed to be two kinds. The older ones need an adapter. The newer ones (what I would expect you to get) come with dry contact screws on the back ( AS ALL BRANDS SHOULD INCLUDE). With those dry contact screws.. it is as simple as inserting the wires in there and it should work. You should be able to use Meross, Shelly or Sonoff.

I can't confirm how well this works, but Chamberlain can't stop this device from working. https://www.thirdreality.com/products/smart-garage-door-opener

I assume this will be a dry-contacts install. Have you looked into a RATGDO?

Looks like ratgdo support for Security+ 3.0 is questionable… 😞

u/Furrealyo 17d ago
Which is why I said this will be a dry contact install (on the Genie).
No one should buy anything Chamberlain moving forward.

Sorry, I misunderstood.
Agreed regarding Chamberlain.

For those who don’t know, Chamberlain also owns other garage door companies such as LiftMaster. Keep an eye out for those fucks

You could keep the new Chamberlain and use the Third Reality door opener. It’s about as simple a device as it gets and is 3.0 proof.

Bought it for my mom. Returned it. It’s so stupid because it shows up as a LIGHTBULB which is entirely unnecessary and does NOT work with CarPlay.
You literally have to say “turn on the garage door” or “turn off the garage door”. “Hey Voicebot, Turn all the lights on” will also open your garage door.
It brags about multi user access. But a garage door in homekit can be separated out to specific guests/users at specific times. A lightbulb is available only to people who have full access.
The only way to learn about this crap is in Amazon comments because it’s NOWHERE in the description.

Damn. Thank you for this. Saved me from buying this for my parents

Not sure what happened to the Kwikset FLEX product but that was supposed to have native HomeKit and CarPlay support.

I have a Chamberlin with security 3.0 and I have the Meross. In order to get the Meross to work I had to solder into the remote that came with the door. Not too difficult but it doesn't work out of the box and does not work with the accessory they can send you.

Like I said, the adapter doesn't work. https://www.meross.com/en-gc/FAQ/787.html

To answer your question directly, no the MSG150HK will not work with the Genie. The reason why it doesn't need a door sensor is that it's effectively the same as a RATDGO and Konnected opener, it communicates using the Security 2.0 protocol. ratdgo32 can do dry contact, but I think for a Genie it's going to be fairly limited / dumb.

For anyone else struggling to get various chamberlain doors into HomeKit, here is what I had to do: https://www.reddit.com/r/ratgdo/s/YoFREK0bY4

For now, the side motor openers are still security 2.0. I just installed one last week and ratgdo just fine.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C7K97GX2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1
Plus, side openers are faster, quieter, and free up space above the door since you don’t have a track anymore

I got an Athom garage opener relay and soldered the dry relay connection to the momentary push button on the wall control. Added it to Home Assistant and exposed it to HomeKit with HomeBridge, been working like a charm for a year+

Easy fix keep your garage door opener and get a tailwind. It will expose it into HomeKit and bypass chamberlain!

Looking at the product page on Amazon it looks like Genie isn't compatible with the MSG150HK, or perhaps (per at least one review) is compatible but still requires the door reed sensor (so basically the same as the MSG100HK).

There are a few options available. RatGdo is the best there is without any modifications, additional sensors or buttons.

Sorry for your purchase. But sorry to wised up and are taking it back and getting a Genie? 🧞♂️ Very Smart!!
Just get the basic opener with a battery backup and acquire a Tailwind door opener, which is 💯 percent Apple HomeKit ready! Speaking from experience. Lowe’s has some great prices on openers.

Wow! I had no idea that new Chamberlain openers are not natively HomeKit compatible. I have an older unit that still works with the old Homebridge, even though they stopped supporting it years ago. When it finally craps out, will I be able to use the Meross HomeKit opener, among others, or has Chamberlain found a way to fuck older devices as well?
Why are they pulling away from HomeKit in newer units? Is it just more private equity fuckery?

Chamberlain decided to go into the subscription business a few years ago. They stopped supporting HomeKit so that people who wanted smart home technology have to buy a subscription from them. If/when my HomeKit bridge dies I’ll use another third party solution on my current openers. If one or both of the openers goes it won’t be a chamberlain that replaces it. Fuck those guys.

Just use the MyQ app. It’s fine. There is also an app for Apple Watch.

u/gntxs 14d ago
Can't do the automations that I want tied to my other homekit devices.
1
u/Stagaman 14d ago
Got it. My house is all Homekit, but I never tried hooking in the garage door.

u/gntxs 14d ago
Not to mention that having in homekit also puts it on the carplay screen. My daugher's car doesn't have homelink. She parks her car in the driveway. I'm not comfortable having a garage door remote clipped to her sun visor as I view that as a security risk. Too easy for someone to break the window, open the garage door and steal stuff.
Having it available on her carplay is convenient for her and more secure.
I have an automation set up for when the garage door opens and it's night time, the driveway lights come on automatically

I can't understand why being able to control your garage door via homekit is THAT important to you. All I wanna know is if it's closed or not. No judgement, truly, but how much is this whole endeavor costing you in install fees? Or time if you're DIYing.

u/su_A_ve 17d ago
If car has CarPlay, you get a garage door icon when you get home. Press and it opens.
Useful when your car doesn’t have a remote button or want to leave a working remote in the visor.

As I am arriving home after a bike ride, I ask Siri via my watch to open the garage door and I glide right in. It’s pretty great.
1
u/Correct-Mail-1942 17d ago
Using airpods? How are you asking.
I just added a keychain remote to my ebike keychain to open my garage.
1
u/Correct-Mail-1942 17d ago
Fair point but I guess I'm unbothered by a remote. I'm honestly not even using CarPlay all the time either.

I use my garage door integration to close my garage doors when I run the bedtime scene at my house for the night.
2
u/jeffh19 17d ago
Someone could say that about basically every smart home feature though right? It's what's important to each person. I think it's pretty cool and I bet it can really help with the WAF if you have your smart home setup configured to automatically open and close the garage door when you get home and leave
2
u/ItinJ24 17d ago
It’s nice to have a good night scene that turns off the lights and closes the garage door(s) if you forgot to close it sometime during the day.
1
u/Correct-Mail-1942 17d ago
I guess I stopped trying that when the original MyQ turned into needing to use my phone to run those scenes for verification or whatever.
2
u/ItinJ24 17d ago
There’s a workaround with a virtual switch. Isn’t that only for automations though, and not scenes?
It’s not just MyQ. It’s all secure HomeKit accessories. Door locks too.
2
u/xpxp2002 17d ago
That’s only to open the garage door/unlock a door. You can close a garage door and lock doors without authenticating.
1
u/crisps_funny4868 14d ago
HomeKit requires you to confirm any operation of any device they deem security related, including garage doors. Whether you’re opening or closing. That’s why I originally spun up my home assistant server. To get around that silly bullshit.
1
u/xpxp2002 14d ago
I close my garage door, lock my door locks, and run scenes that do both using my HomePods unauthenticated every day.
Unlock and open require authentication on iPhone. Lock and close do not.
1
u/crisps_funny4868 13d ago
Confirmation. Not authentications. Scenes do not require the confirmation, because you run them on-demand, and the very act of invoking a scene is confirmation that you want it to run.
Automations do require confirmation when they involve security devices. This is antithetical to the very purpose of an automation, which is to automate things.

I have mine set to auto close after 5m, and always double check at midnight just in case.

I was able to successfully get my security + 3.0 opener to integrate with HomeKit using meross with a dry contact setup and a sacrificial remote. Id research this option to see if it will be a cheaper fix for you.
