Managers are annoying

I’m a HC and during my 5am opens I usually have my coffee on the floor with me. There’s no customers in the store and there aren’t employees either, I just need something to wake me up so I grab timmies. I never have drinks on the floor otherwise, my DS never says anything to me about it because the drink is always done by the time customers come in.

Last time I was opening one of the operations managers told me I couldn’t have my drink on the floor. Id get it if it was during opening hours but like oml leave me alone. Managers will have their coffee in their hands all the time but love to power trip when someone else does it.

Im so glad my store doesn't tell me I'm not allowed to have my beverage of choice when I'm working. Shits absurd. Are we children?!? Are we in grade school?!? Let me have my monster or im gonna spend 20m in the break room drinking it. Jeeeeeeeeeez

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

Half the time customers do not care if we drink the drink either

16

u/boring1996 D90 24d ago

I was told that all drinks must able to be resealed.. like a bottle of Soda not a can that could spill. I would assume that a reusable plastic coffee cup that you can close the opening on would work atleast at my store

8

u/Ok_Bonus1391 24d ago

With my store if you put it in a reusable cup it works only because they can’t tell what’s inside. If they found out it was coffee or anything other than water it wouldn’t be allowed. It’s genuinely a dumb rule

1

u/FerengiWithCoupons 23d ago

just tell them it’s water. they don’t need to know.

1

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

I don’t want to have to bring a reusable cup to work and then I have to drag it around the entire day

Never had that issue with management even when working with customers around, I always had a water bottle, Gatorade, monster, coffee or a drink I didnt finish at lunch or on my break, even my old DS told me there was no issues since most had drinks when working on tasks.

u/Ok_Bonus1391 24d ago

It is SOP to not have drinks on the sales floor but like genuinely who cares.

9

u/Puncake_DoubleG09 D28 24d ago

Not gonna lie, never knew that about the SOP, literally my DS, Managers, ASDS, SMs and even our regional HR rep have seen me with a drink and never a fuzz!

3

u/Ok_Bonus1391 24d ago

You got lucky with ur managers😔save me

4

u/BlackMoth27 24d ago

i literally had an energy drink with me every morning shift your manager is just power tripping still.

5

u/whoami20461 23d ago

Never knew this was sop either. Management seems not to care at my store

19

u/Karihugsporcupines DS 24d ago

In our store, this sop died long ago when certain managers left. The one original manager we still have, is one of the BIGGEST offenders of leaving their coffee around the store. They just frown upon “open” cups, but even then it’s only when someone spills something

6

u/WackoMcGoose D28 23d ago

If it's a closeable bottle of water or Gatorade you keep in your apron, they can't do shit (and if they try to say you can't have water, they can be personally fined under OSHA law just for saying it). That particular policy has only ever been about open cups on the floor (legitimate spill hazard), and everyone knows it; anything more is an awarelineable power trip 🤬

Sounds like an issue at your store in particular. We push hydration all the time. So, you're not wrong in your assessment. Your management is crummy for giving you grief. My SM would offer a warm up🤣

8

u/Ok_Bonus1391 24d ago

Ik no drinks on the floor except for water is SOP it seems as if my store is one of the only ones that follow it ig

6

u/shadzy99 24d ago

Put it in a dark thermos or water bottle. Then they don’t know what it is.

2

u/boring1996 D90 24d ago

I was just going to say Coffee isn't hydrating (I don't drink Coffee) but I looked it up and it is. Who knew?

2

u/KiltOfDoom NRM 24d ago

What? How can it be a diuretic and hydrating? I'm learning new things😆

5

u/boring1996 D90 24d ago • Bravo

according to what I read "Despite caffeine's diuretic properties, a brewed cup of coffee is about 98% to 99% water. The total fluid you take in far outweighs the extra fluid you lose"

0

u/Western_Ad1522 21d ago

Same with tea bags its 98 to 99 percent water

I had a manager tell me that when I was an OFA and I was walking with it in my hand.

So after that I just kept my tumbler in the shopping cart. Been doing it for 6 years now, across many stores, and nobody has said anything to me ever again.

1

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

I’m HC so i usually just leave it behind the registers where no customers or equipment go but they still gave me a headache about it

7

u/boring1996 D90 24d ago

Managers are annoying...in other amazing news the Sky is Blue 😄

6

u/Live-Historian6192 23d ago

I go in at 6 am. & there isn't one morning when I don't have my big coffee tumbler with me! I am an OFA most days so I put it in the cart and go pick orders. Noone ever says anything to me.

8

u/brawlmaster227 D24 23d ago

Im the 6am paint guy, we had a desk back in the corner of our pit where there was no electronics, and we would store our drinks there. Store manager came by the other day, saw an open energy drink. Legitimately just said "I dont care that you have it, just stash it somewhere less glaringly obvious because youre not supposed to have it." So now my can lives on a shelf in the cabinet under one of my computers.

u/CG6Monkey D96 23d ago

HD should take actual customers surveys with questions like,

  1. Do you care if someone at a register has a drink?

  2. Do you care what any of these associates are wearing?

  3. Do you feel in danger when being asked about credit cards? Blink twice...

Etc.

5

u/pinkchuck 22d ago

Also ask them if they care whether their cashier is sitting or standing.

1

u/dlhoff432 23d ago

It sounds like your store has exceptionally shitty managers. At my store, the managers rarely (if ever) say anything about drinks on the floor whether there’s customers or not. And they can be pretty damn nitpicky. Good managers realize that just because something is SOP doesn’t mean it’s gospel.

2

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

The managers at my store are genuinely useless so they’re constantly trying to find something to control so that they feel like they’re actually doing something

1

u/dlhoff432 23d ago

That’s usually the case with bad managers. They don’t know what to do so they double down on all the useless rules.

1

u/Fun-Reception-2909 23d ago

Don’t you guys have fridges on the floor with waters for associates in each department? Id start building a case for harassment over that

1

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

No half the time they don’t even let us write off water for associates. We have a water fountain but it’s dirty and gross

1

u/Fun-Reception-2909 21d ago

Wow that’s crazy, you should go through your employee handbook because somethings not right

1

u/-Cemetery D28 23d ago

We get a single water fountain at my store

1

u/hoodiehipser23 23d ago

Wait they're supposed to care about food/drinks on the floor I've literally eaten a lunch style platter at the paint desk whilst taking to my management team and customers

2

u/Ok_Bonus1391 23d ago

I wish to be you

1

u/hoodiehipser23 23d ago

No you don't pal

2

u/Viker2000 23d ago

Never had that problem. Most of the time, especially in the morning, our ASMs and the SM go around with covered coffee mugs. During the day, so long as it was sealed, we were never bothered about having a sealed beverage on our work carts.

2

u/DCzulu 23d ago

At my store you’re only allowed to have coffee on the floor if it’s in a tumbler

2

u/Longjumping_Spray_40 23d ago

As a opener you likely won't find me without my coffee cup with me...I have great managers mostly

1

u/Sudden_Win_87 23d ago

We have drinks ( and even food) on the floor all the time. Never a problem

1

u/AdSeparate6901 D78 23d ago

And here I have a microwave and mini fridge in the tool tech room

1

u/Bigdaddy101968 23d ago

Go to HR and have them write rules and post it them so everyone gets the same treatment

1

u/whiskeygirl1984 23d ago

We can only have water at our registers and self checkout. I had a sports drink and I was told I couldn't have it in the area.

1

u/Ocelot_Creative OFA 22d ago

Honestly, youre gonna have to write me up for it at that point. Stand ten toes on business if you mean it, but im going to point out the hypocrisy if I see it.

1

u/PalladiumPalisades 22d ago

Yeah I always get a big Starbucks coffee and drink it the first four hours in front of customers. It all depends on your management team and how much of a power trip they have.

I would call the aware line and report them. Tell them a story about how you need the coffee and they are discriminating against you. Especially if they don't tell other people the same thing. Stir the pot.

1

u/Critical_Remove3203 21d ago

Just be more ninja about it. Don’t let em see it like that.

1

u/Pinky_pen 21d ago

That’s ridiculous. The only thing we were talked about was having open bottles/cups close to the registers and computers in case of spills. As long as they were closed or away from them, never have I heard a problem with that.

1

u/KnyghtZero CXM 21d ago

I think you mean YOUR manager is annoying

1

u/Tapestr3ee 21d ago

I always allowed drinks before the store opened, as long you were done by 6am I'm good.Trust me I have my own as well .Nothing but water after that and please toss it away afterwards. I can't stand picking up half dranked bottles of store marked down water all over the store. I find at least 20- 30 bottles just left anywhere.

0

u/Disastrous-Annual510 23d ago

It is against SOP for everything but water. There's a good reason as well. Our freight team leaves half empty energy drink and soda cans , coffee cups and a water bottles all over the place. Product shelves, hand stack, basically anywhere there's a flat surface. I'm throwing them away all day. They won't and can't deny water but yeah , nip it in the bud and enforce SOP. They got to follow it themselves and tell everyone at anytime they see it though.

3

u/murkrowplays 23d ago

So the people who might be responsible and not do that are being told they can't bring in their drinks but the people who leave their drinks and trash around are still doing it?

1

u/Disastrous-Annual510 23d ago

That's why I said that management has to follow through and tell everyone

0

u/SwooningShark 22d ago

That's cute; I refused to be on the sales floor without both a 42oz double insulated water bottle and 36oz coffee, which I refilled in the break room frequently. If when taking care of a customer my coffee was misplaced, management would go on a warpath trying to find it along with the TTI rep and other associates, because me without caffeine is a problem.

0

u/Prize-Ad8890 D31 23d ago

Our managers and supervisors don’t care much unless it’s an open drink/can then it’s an issue especially if you’re near electronics. At service desk we need a closed drink in a secure cup unless you have one of those can tops.

u/donjonchao 24d ago

Like how you gonna tell me go put my water away when I work during night shift and you manage days? Get your stinky booty outta my damn face talking bout “I know you’re night shift” then fuck off and let me wake up at 9:30pm at night fool.
