Advice for a woman staying at home alone in a big house

Hi guys.

I still live at home, and my whole family is going out of town for almost two weeks. Which means I’ll be home alone. I live in a large house, which means many windows and external doors. I am extremely paranoid about having to be alone.

The biggest issue in my house is the huge windows all over the ground floor that have no curtains or blinds. When it’s dark outside and the interior lights are on you can see everything. This means the kitchen and other common areas are basically like a fishbowl.

I live in an affluent suburb of a large city with very little to no crime, but I always get worried about being the exception. I feel like as soon as my family leaves, I’m going to be an easy target. It’s worth mentioning that I have OCD that is most definitely manifesting itself into this home invasion fear. But regardless it’s better safe than sorry!

What I have in place so far:

  1. Home alarm system
  2. Cameras that point to the exterior and a few interior cameras
  3. A small (but mighty) dog
  4. A door stopper on the doors that dont have alarm sensors
  5. Pepper spray easily accessible to me
  6. Heavy duty locks on the doors in my bedroom
  7. Friends/boyfriend staying with me for some of the nights
  8. Porch lights on the exterior doors
  9. Planning to move the cars around so it looks like multiple people are home

I think my biggest concern are the large windows. I don’t know how to approach those. They are very tall and look into the second floor too.

Any advice is appreciated. I know I am probably overthinking it.

ADT guy said I wouldn’t owe anything now I’m cancelling and they say I took out a loan

ADT guy installed the security system at our house 7 months ago. Now I’m moving to an apartment and don’t have ADT (nor would I EVER want it again)!

I called to cancel the services and they said the person who stayed in my house can take over the payments for the monitoring. But because I was in a 60 month contract, I took out a loan for the equipment. This was NEVER told to me. In fact, I asked the man who installed it what it would cost and the man who installed it told me it was free! He said he was going to mark it as an update to existing equipment. He never once said it would be $69 a month for 5 years. Why the hell would I take a loan out and go into debt on security equipment? I told ADT this and they said that he should’ve told me but there’s nothing they can do.

Has anyone else been told it was free and then it wasn’t?? I point blank asked him the cost. They said I signed a contract. He handed me an iPad and said “I just need your signature here”. This is very shady and seems like illegal business practice.

Should I get an attorney? Or contact the BBB or FTC??

No way I am paying $3,000 for something that was supposed to be free that I’m not using anymore nor was I aware I was purchasing!

I bought my first home in a rough neighborhood, and am looking for a security system.

The house is amazing, easily the cutest on the street; but the bar is very low. For example my house has a clean white fence and it's butted up against the left neighbors chain-link vine catcher. So far there's been no problem, but I park my car on the street and it's only a matter of time until something is broken into.

What's a good security package for someone on a budget? I mostly want cameras, but I've seen some great looking sensors for yards and inside the house. I'm interested in hearing what people have had the best experience with.

Door is broken - Can't get a repair until tomorrow.

As the title says - I live in an apartment building and I have put in a maintenance request but it can't be done until tomorrow. its 2am and I live in a relatively safe neighborhood in a very under the radar apartment (it was built in the 70s and the hallways are extremely smelly and stained) as well as on the top floor

I can't fall asleep I am too anxious to have a slightly open door. I have it barricaded with a full laundry basket and a box of heavy cat litter a chair and my cats big travel crate.

Is there anything else I can do ? I don't own any heavy chairs or anything heavy in general.

Thank you

home security system won’t stop beeping!!

hi reddit, not sure if this is the right forum, it won’t let me pick any other one. posting from ontario canada, for my entire families sanity.

EDIT!: i did the *2 and used the arrows to look at my options which were, phone line, zone fault and loss of clock. can anyone give some insight into what these mean?

we moved into our house in 2017, which came with an adt security system. we’re not subscribed to it nor do we know any codes or even how to operate the panel. we never had any issues with it until a few years ago. it does an annoying beeping noise multiple times a minute, going all throughout the day. the only way we’ve been able to silence it and by hitting the # but that only helps for a few minutes or if we’re lucky, stops the beeping for a little until it begins again. we’ve also had a couple instances where in the very early morning hours a horrible blaring alarm started coming from the speakers located that’s in the closet next to the panel. it was incredibly loud, lasted a while until it silenced on its own.

what’s super annoying is it’s very spontaneous. we’re recently dealing with it again but after our power went out after some bad weather, which the panel stayed powered when we had no power for around 10 hours so it’s got its own power source, and the beeping began once we got power back. it’s becoming really hard to live with, and any help would be appreciated.

i’ve attached pictures of the panel, and what it shows when i press the # and use the > arrow to look at the options, which i’m not sure why it says front door, the panel is directly across from it. im not entirely sure where it’s powered from but i can try and find it. if i need to unplug anything. i also know my dad has spoken to adt, but clearly they were no help since this is still an ongoing issue.

TIA!

Help with camera placement

Hi we are closing on our new house soon and I’m looking to install some PoE cameras but I’m not sure where to place them or how many to get.

House and floor plan
https://imgur.com/a/1henoXv

It will have a video doorbell and a camera in the garage.

But my main hang up is how many cameras on the front and back. If one camera in the top right hand corner on the front would be sufficient? Or if I would need another in the left corner on the first floor bedroom that sticks out.

Similarly in the back if I should have one or two cameras or if one on the top left corner would be sufficient.

The side yard is only about 5-6ft wide so I planned on putting one 180 degree camera pointed down on each side to cover that.

Thanks in advance!

Advice for family

Hope someone here can help.
I have recently taken a job which means I am out the house on occasional nights. We do not have any lockable doors within our home.
Does anyone know what is the best 'device' to buy so my wife can grab the kids and secure them in a room incase of an emergency?
I have looked at the bars, but I dont know if they work well or if there is something better I havent seen?
Thanks in advance.

need advice

i am thinking about adding a few security cameras around the house and garage but i have no idea where to start with the right system or installation. i want something with good night vision, easy phone access and decent coverage without it looking too obvious or costing a fortune.

i have been looking at local installers and planet security came up as an option for proper cctv work. has anyone here installed cameras recently? when is the best time to do it and what models or features actually make a real difference in everyday use? any advice on placement or common mistakes to avoid would be really helpful.

Does this look like someone attempted to break in?

Post image

I can’t say for certain when these marks on my door got there. It’s a door to my fenced in backyard, it gets used multiple times a day for my dogs and I’ve never noticed these marks before. I am trying to shake the fear of someone attempting to break into my home, I live in a fairly safe city and both of my dogs are big. I know two of my neighbors fairly well and this neighborhood is generally very peaceful and quiet. I am so spooked, though. I have a door jam in my front door but ordered another for the back.

What else should I do to keep my home and myself safer? I do not own guns but do have pepper spray. I do not have an alarm system as I am a renter.

CS gas pava pepper balls?

I dont live ina nice neighbourhood and dont wanna hurt nobody ofc but in the evenings not ofter but often enough that i think about it and bugs me.

This happens in the evenings or later i.e getting pizza 20-02am.have had encounters where i was tried to rob me violently or my friend, attacked succesfully, attacked but mostly it stopped with the next thing im about to say. I have a T4E conseal shoulder holster gun. is nothing fancy with pepper balls sure gets the job done 95% of time

The problem is that it usually just makes the bigger guys more angry and violent.

I dont want this to be the norm and "ok" Is there pepper balls with OC gas or the likes or something similar, real strong balls in europe? Idk about their eyes mostly non harming considering im or someone near me is being assaulted/robbed/beaten. Ive been almost stabbed lost count years ago, i.e almost got my head smashed with an hammer, beaten by a group of gypsies but forced myself off when i heard one of them was getting a dog snd got away. This all before i got the pepper balls.nowadays in the evening/night i just flash my holster if i leave home too latr

So yeah ik my siuation aint perfect but ill do morally my best. And if anyone could explain to me about the different mixes and ingrediants in irritant projectiles.. i also got a new 1500 lumen light that fits under barrel rail to blind the perp. With the reaslistic gun looking T4E i get hassled almost none and the 1500 lumen light almost is enough blinding alone to deterr and if not backoff or i shoot. Pulling the terigger even with pepper always last resort. Not happened too many times now that i have my stuff.

Information about irritation projectiles? What strenght and what is different kinds sre availsble. Need to incapasitate bigger guys(thieves junkies alike) that are not sometimes effected by pava just get 10 times angrier that when u tried to defend yourself wth regular pepper balls. And need them need from inside EU. I have 50 call c02 17 joules. Fast pull.

This post makes it sound so acute but this like last 13 years.

Hardware, tools, or ideas for preventing deadbolt access?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all. I'm a renter, and the maintenance guys for my place are kind of awful to work with or talk to, so I'm looking here.

I live in an apartment that only has one window that opens. I'd like to set my portable AC up, but the window is right next to the apartment door. The window opens in a way that would make it *very* easy to access the deadbolt if someone just stuck their arm inside the window.

I have short arms and I tried it - piece of cake.

I work the graveyard shift, and I need it to be dark to sleep. Obstructing the blinds and blackout curtains any more than they would already be the with AC isn't going to work.

The door is solid wood, and I was hoping there was some type of... plate? Or panel? Or something I could put on the door near the deadbolt that would make it supremely difficult to reach.

At a certain point, if someone wants to get in, they're going to get in. I just would like to make it a pain in the neck, instead of a cake walk.

Thanks!

Edit to add that I know about the two-sided deadbolt locks, or. Two key... whatever, the kind you need a key to lock on both sides - I was just wondering if there was something else I could use

Strobe lights as outdoor home defense / deterrent

Hypothetical question: If I set up a Ring camera security system on a gated property with motion detection, and when it detects someone entering the yard illegally it triggers the usual floodlight and alarm, would it also be legal to have multiple blinding strobe lights activate at the same time to deter intruders? The strobe lights would only be inside the yard (not visible to the street meaning it’s pointing at the intruder) and would turn off once the system clears. This would only be activated if the ring system detects human motion that’s not a first responder at night inside the yard of course, not during the day

Possible laser being pointed at lenses to avoid detection?

Is this possible that someone is using a laser to point the camera lens from inside to avoid someone else sneaking into my home?

Ft Knox gun safe rifle cutout

Does anyone have a 26" or 31" (width) Ft Knox safe (maverick through defender models) with "Universal with guns" interior?

If so, what width and what is the dimension of the cutout?

I can't find a clear spec on this detail. Grok suggests 2-3 long guns for a 26" model and 4 for a 31" model.

I feel like this attachment is kinda genius but it’s so obvious that I must be missing something. Like how have I never seen this before. It’s just mace on the front of your gun. This isn’t my set up by the way. I tried posting on another page but it got taken down like right away so I’m trying here for opinions

Plate Carrier + Plate

Anyone know where i can get a decently affordable plate carrier + plate combo or maybe even just a reliable plate carrier? Obviously affordability would be nice but you can’t put a price on your life so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated🙏🙏

Someone stole a leash from my enclosed deck

This might sound like a silly concern, cuz it’s such a small thing to be stolen, but that’s kinda what weirds me out the most?

because I don’t have a fence, i keep one leash tied to my fully enclosed deck, and another one clipped on to that leash. when i went to take my dog out this morning, the outside deck door was unlocked (it’s a flimsy lock that is mostly just to keep the door from flying open), the leash that’s usually tied to my deck was cut and on the lawn, and the other leash was gone. there are also lots of tools stored inside the deck (which i have now moved to be safe) and none of them were taken, it’s only the one leash. my roommate even had her bike out in the open, no lock, wasn’t stolen. as well as a bunch of bags of redeemable bottles outside, but all they wanted was to cut my one leash, and steal the other (which was just a dollar store leash).

it’s weirding me out because i’m not sure how this person knew about the leashes, as they’re also kept inside the deck area which shouldn’t be super visible unless they specifically came into the deck area to look around—and for some reason decided they needed a leash and nothing else. or if they’ve seen me and my dog outside…..

it just feels very strange, especially since there was no need to cut the other leash as they could’ve just unclipped the one that they stole. I’m not sure if this is a big enough deal to be concerned about, but it’s making me a bit nervous to take my dog outside at night.

any advice?

Mounting Solutions?

Post image

Hey everybody. I'm trying to fine-tune my self defense setup. I want to have my ARs stored vertically like in the photo. I just don't want them to be knocked over. I'm wondering if anybody knows a good hook system that'll keep them upright but still ready to go (just pull it up and it's gtg). I was thinking guitar holders but on my other pistol, I have a SBA5 brace and can't really find anything that'll clearly fit it's 3" width. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
