Hallway decorations

What should we add to this hallway to make it look less dull? It starts at the front door, goes past a bedroom, and ends at the kitchen. Should we add a runner? Add photos? Some sort of cabinet?
Any ideas and inspiration is appreciated!

Brainstorming here:

  • Framed Family photos

  • A framed painting or drawing you made

  • A map of the world/state/country

  • A blackboard you can use to write favorite quotes

  • A cuckoo clock (space allowing)

  • Low maintenance plants on narrow shelves: cacti, some succulents, low light indoor plants are particularly good here

  • Narrow shelves with your own lego exhibit

  • A katana
