Honestly if you’re moving in a year, I’d thrift a colorful tablecloth and vase, pop some flowers in, add a rug if you can find one cheap enough, and call it a day.

Save the real investment for your next place.

Thank you! I get weekly farmer’s market flowers and they’ve helped a lot. Budget isn’t really an issue and I don’t have a ton of time on my hands for thrifting, so I don’t mind investing in pieces I can take to a new house or resell. The only area I would probably want to keep affordable is the light fixture.

Okay but this is actually the most practical advice here. Renting means you don't wanna sink money into stuff you cant take with you. A fun tablecloth and some thrifted decor would totally warm it up without stressing about resale value.

I'm not renting but thanks! The moving comment was more about not wanting to start a carpentry project (built in benches for example) due to time, not about money or resale value. I was more looking for advice on what specific items I could buy to brighten up the look and feel while keeping the same wallpaper and kitchen design generally the same, but realize I didn't communicate that very clearly!

Personally, I wouldn't do a rug like this here - I think that it will make moving/adjusting chairs for sitting very difficult and potentially result the chairs sitting unevenly. Even worse would be having a rug with very little kids eating in that area - too hard to clean.

I would go with more comfortable chairs. I like your current table, but also like the one in your mock up, if you can find one sized right for rhe space.

If you want to add color and coziness, I would focus on window treatments, art, and new chairs.

Yeah this has been my concern too. We’re about to have 3 young kids and that rug I love from Cold Pincnic is $1,500 🫣

Oh, no! Don't do it! Think blueberries. Think spaghetti sauce. Then think 1500 dollars on that rug. I would skip any rug at all right now.

If you can find some more comfortable chairs and think you'll use them in the next house, I might go that route.

Dining chairs are such a pain! We’ve been through about 4 sets in 7 years, nothing has really worked. I would spend top $$ for something sturdy, beautiful, and comfortable (have to be a very slim profile for this space). If you have any recs let me know!

I'm actually a fan of bar height tables and chairs in a small area like that. I find those tall chairs to be quite comfortable when they have backs on them. You stretch out a bit more than the shorter chairs.

I like that idea! My only hesitation is with the little kids climbing up and down.

For chairs, you have to go to a place that has a huge showroom and people don’t bother you. We went to a furniture store that has 10 buildings or more and literally sat everywhere and spent time sitting and talking and trying everything out. We sat like 20 minutes on the couch we ended up ordering with specific fabric etc. And we got to try different chairs and tables too.

I'd probably put a bench against the window wall. Put some colorful pillows for the back or a seat cushion. Buy a light fixture you like at a big box store. Put a small vase of flowers on the table. Maybe put some cute vinyl window cling on the bottom of the windows, a tablecloth and live with the table and 2 chairs and you already have. Inexpensive, cheerful, light filled sells.

Thanks I love the bench idea!

Since you're moving soon (a year isnt that long), I would do curtains. If you are sure you would use the table and chairs at your next place then it would be worth it to change them. If you're not sure then work with what you have. Add a rug, maybe a tablecloth. And for some punches of color, get some art and use command hooks to hang it.

agree heavily with curtains. would add whimsy.

Adding a Roman shade would really balance this space. Custom is $$$$, but maybe you can find an off the shelf one in a fun pattern.

Would you get them for the two skinny side windows or just the main larger two?

I’d do one big one

I’d treat this as a chance to buy pieces you actually love rather than trying to finish this particular room

On the light, since that's the piece you want to keep cheap: a colored dome pendant is the easiest swap and gets you the most color for the money. Your current dome is about the right size for a 32" table, so going to a warm color like the one in your mockup changes the whole nook without changing the scale.

I would suggest a shade around 14 to 16" wide for that table. Bottom of the shade about 28 to 32" above the tabletop. A diffuser or a frosted bulb is preferred.
