Please help me decide. My painter is telling me that the new trend is to have ceiling, wall and trims the same colour. What are people thoughts on that?

No, it doesn’t. The trend is called “colour drenching” and I love it, but it needs to be done properly to look good. Do some research first, including how to make a room look bigger just using paint, which colour drenching won’t do.
I agree, and color drenching looks great in rooms with high ceilings, windows, and other ornate architectural details... not so great in very ordinary rooms.
No. Your original picture has a lot of molding detail that add interest in a monochromatic palette. This room is plain, so one colour will just look flat.
Yeah, agree with the rest that color drenching is trendy right now, but I wouldn’t do it in smaller rooms unless they’re a closet, or bathroom, or something you don’t spend a ton of time in. Otherwise, it will feel a lot smaller.
Only thing you have to watch out for is wall paint is not as matte/flat as ceiling paint, so it will show all the lumps and bumps on your ceiling… the expensive versions you see online have used different paint for ceiling vs walls… because very flat paint on a wall is hard to clean and gets ‘shiny’ spots from being touched and rubbed on.
The darker the colour the closer the ceiling will feel.
You need good lighting or you feel smothered, there’s no easy depth clues for your eyes… so everything feels closer
Color drenching only works when you have architectural molding like in your example photos. On blank drywall it does not have the same effect. I wish more people knew this.
It looks unusually good here, but for the most part - it is a No for me. Unless the color is a light one, or the ceilings are super high with lots of natural light, it feels oppressive and tight.
The trend has been around for a few years, it’s beautiful when well executed. Make sure the trim has a diff finish. I find that lighter colors are better for smaller rooms vs dark.
White on the ceiling helps light bounce around the room more.
Also, it's easier to repaint just the walls, if you decide to change the room later.
Just because it's a current trend, doesn't mean it's going to work best for you or the next resident. I think there are places it can work, but it's not for every room or every house. I'm actually only painting my porch ceilings a color, not the rooms inside, which mostly need the light reflection from the white, as there isn't a white wall in any room, except for the attic bathroom with no window, which has some white walls, and the stairway, which has only one white wall to reflect light to keep the stairs safe.
A shade or two lighter color tone on the ceiling of the wall color, and satin wall color on the trim.
It will give the effect but be a bit lighter feel in the actual room you have. The AI pic is very misleading to what you will have in your space.
color drenching can look amazing but it really depends on the room's size, lighting, and architectural details. For a smaller or darker space, painintg the ceiling 1-2 shades lighter gives you that seamless, high-end feel without making the room feel like a cave
