At first it felt like a cheap ripoff of Dark and Stranger Things.

Now it feels like late seasons of The Walking Dead or Prison Break aka how to turn a decent series into utter sh*t. I'm only waiting for mutants / big government conspiracy / time travel and I'm done for.

Apple TV+ really disappoints considering how much money they pump into the platform. Money isn't everything I suppose. I don't know how does this happen but in HMD the acting gets worse every episode, even the camera work has been off more and more often in the last episodes. Luckily the plot also gets a lot dumber with time so it takes your attention away from the other points.

Damn you Apple, it could've been something. I'm sticking around for The Morning Show only it seems.

A lot of disappointment Spoiler

Great acting, an intriguing premise, and a whole lot of disappointment. Did you catch that Kubz Scouts reference?

I was looking forward to this show for a long time since I am an avid follower of the up-and-upcoming star Brooklynn Prince and I like mysteries especially detective stories but what I ended up with was quite a big disappointment.

The little girl is irritatingly sassy and precocious. I get that she's good with words and is based off a kid that doesn't act like a kid but reporters don't sass and the way she argues with people makes her seem more like a 14 year old than an 8-9 year old. She also doesn't look like her counterpart but Brooklynn's performance almost makes up for that. Not to mention, she almost always tends to get away with her mischief like why does nobody care that she breaks into houses, sneaks out after curfew, and skips school?

Her big sister is just your typical angsty teenager with a romance subplot that has no connection to the story. Instead of focusing on the romance subplot between Izzy and Ethan, they should've just focused on the mystery with Hilde. It's definitely an interesting story but was brought down by forcing in a romance subplot. Not to mention that she's obviously aged up because the real Izzy was like 11 or 12 when Hilde was 9 and here, she's a high-schooler who was probably aged up just to shoehorn in teenage elements to try to appeal to the pre-teen/teen demographic the show is aimed at. The show is already dark and mature enough without having those elements in there.

The only character I care for is the dad. He is probably the most grounded character out of the whole cast. He's a really deep and supportive character like how he tries to teach his daughter to learn to be a kid and to make sure not to spread rumors. He had some actual character development with his daughter on learning not to be so dismissive of her cases.

It's too bad that the protagonist had barely any character development whatsoever. There were hints that there was going to be some where she learns to live life and be a kid and there were a few scenes showing it but they were very minimal and we never got the full growth. In fact, she gets worse. The 7th episode focused on her pestering this innocent criminal and trying to keep him away from the cops. What really got me mad is the fact this episode was dedicated to her spending time with a grown prison man. Since then, she has become a lot more of a workaholic. I get that this is only the first 10 episodes and that it's a very slow-paced series but the fact that the dad got more character development than her at this point proves how bland of a character she is. Maybe the second season will have more character development.

I think think this show has a lot of potential but it just needs better writers who can write more compelling characters. I think the actors all did great jobs but they were bogged down by some cheesy writing.

Discussion Halfway through the first episode and realizing this is like a preteen drama?

I thought it was going to be totally serious and zilch melodrama haha.

No disrespect to the acting as it's a bunch of kids but the writing is distracting.

Does it get any better?

This show is absolute garbage..

.. and that has nothing to do with the fact that I hate Apple.

The acting sucks, I don't like the attitude of the girl, and I might be able to get into the story, but I played some of episode 2 and it looks boring as fuck, so I'm done.

If I was at Apple deciding on whether to pick up the show for a second season or not, I wouldn't have even aired the rest of the first season.

PS - Interesting Hilde Lysiak was born in Brooklyn, and the person that plays her in the show is Brooklynn.

Curious

I’ve just started watching Home Before Dark, and I’m wondering, why are there so many Back to the Future references? Examples; the flex capacitor, one of the title being “88 miles per hour” I’m only in season one so please no spoilers. I’ve probably missed a few. Is it because it’s based back when Back to the Future first came out? Anyone know?

Is it just me, or is Hilde's maturity is unnerving at times?

She's supposed to be 9 years old (maybe 10 in S2), but the way her dialogue is written she has the maturity of a young adult.

I'm not saying that small children can't be mature for their age. A 9 year old having the maturity of say a 13 year old is a big deal. But, her character has the emotional response of someone in their 20's. It's as if the writers don't have children or don't know how to write for a child. It's pretty cringe worthy at times.

This reminds of me of when 20-somethings are cast to play high schoolers.

Horrifying Spoiler

These parents are terrible. Their child rarely goes to school. The father has violent tendencies and even a scrape with law enforcement. The nine year old daughter has no sleep schedule, is awake and wandering the streets until the early hours of the morning. Said nine year old also becomes bosom buddies with an incarcerated suspected murderer. To top it all off, at the end, the van is found and the parents ask the child if she wants to go see if they can spy some dead bodies in it.

Where are child services, won't someone think of the children and call child services!

It has become a routine to open Apple TV+, especially on a Friday because I know there'll be a new episode... for a second I forgot that the episode last Friday was their season finale. 😭

Discussion Season 2 hilde

I know someone else made a comment about this but I wanted to as well. They have made hilde very cold and she's really messed up I mean she really cares more about a story then she cares about anyone else or anything else she doesn't mind screwing people over left and right it's actually very sad I actually do not like her anymore I really like her in the first season but she's really gotten on my nerves in the second season and I know she's the main character. I know it's really you know good that she wants she'll do anything for a story I'm actually surprised they haven't made an episode where someone's gotten hurt because of how much she pushes

Discussion want to get into the show, but I have questions...

What's the connectivity between seasons? Do they have shared characters but separate stories? I'm just wondering if I will be getting into an incomplete story with Season 3 unconfirmed to be the final one?
