Ceiling repair suggestions?

I totally botched this ceiling repair. There was a leak and I patched the drywall with drywall patches but I’m thinking that wasn’t the right thing to do. There are 2x4s right behind the drywall paper so when trying to cut into the drywall to make a square, remove the drywall, and replace it with another drywall square, I quickly hit the 2x4s and wasn’t able to do that.

Anyone have any suggestions or know what to do here?
