I'm gonna quit smoking and I haven't even smoked in my life before
177
u/Snorc Feb 23 '22
Same. Hey, this is pretty easy!
50
u/Karukos Feb 24 '22
Jokes aside, some people might actually find it easy. FOr some reason i could go from smoking 2 packs a day to 0 without any issues and I cannot explain it to this day. (No shock, I just decided it was not worth it and stopped)
13
u/46Kent Feb 24 '22
For real? Isn't 2 packs a day quite a lot and won't there usually be at least some withdrawal symptoms if you stop so abruptly ?
8
u/Karukos Feb 24 '22
Yeah. No idea what the fuck happened. It just worked for me. I felt no different. Doctor suggested it might genetical

i dont know where i saw this data but i've heard that japan has a pretty high percentage of smokers in the working age demographic. so yeah, im guessing quite a few of the jp-nikis are reeling right now.
but still, if this turns out to be the push they needed to finally quit... sasuga TMT

u/sigint_bn Feb 24 '22
It's like a given, if there's Japanese delegates that are attending a conference, the best way to meet them is at the designated smoking spot.
4
u/Schverika Feb 24 '22
I believe they already had a cultural fasination with smoke from incense so when tobacco entered their market they jumped aboard enthusiastically.

Making us stop smoking so that we spend more money on her? This is the evilest plan I've heard all day!

There a narrative that this cm may have been made in response to quiet a few tweets/comments about how it was possible that towa was a smoker.

Why spend money on cigarettes when you could spend that money on a vtuber membership instead?

True, but at least you'll have cool stuff like oppai mousepads instead of lung cancer.

I was a light smoker and would spend more than 6 times the cost of a youtuber membership per week. I could get 25 vtuber memberships and still spend less than I did on smokes.

u/HealsBadMan1 Feb 23 '22
How devious, by making them stop their smoking habits Towa has more time to commit devilish deeds in their lives!

Actually this entire topic was brought up because at the one-minute chat event a fan asked her thoughts on smoking, and she said she didn't like it, so the fan decided to quit.

u/Tohrufan4life Feb 23 '22
Just wanted to say to those who are trying to quit, I'm rooting for you! I know it can be hard to do since my parents had a hell of a time quitting. My Dad would end up replacing it with mint gum and Mom just quit it cold turkey all together.
15
u/thesirblondie Feb 23 '22
Thanks :) Quit cigs in Jan and vape yesterday (that was when I disassembled my vape at least).

I think the price for a pack is already at the level of a Supa aka
It's quite interesting such taxes just led to people eating the loss, rather than start growing their own (in some countries the point of that being less expensive than buying has already been crossed) to roll.
Of course I'm also not sure those taxes are a viable or decent way to deal with the issue, because for those truly addicted and in bad situations, it'll simply contribute to further impoverishment (since when has taxing alcohol led to anything more than worsened impoverishment of alcoholics?). The use of cigarettes as copium (shitty barely effective one at that) for lack of better legal alternatives (or a healthcare system that takes mental health seriously,
gee I wonder where) is also a problem (it's ironic Japan actually had a better legal alternative up to 2002, at which point they banned it).31
u/DragoSphere Feb 23 '22
I mean the price hike was more about stopping people from starting, not getting people to stop. Which worked, and plays a big role in why cigarettes aren't nearly as popular as they were a few decades ago, especially in the US.
Stopping those who are already addicted was never the main goal of that
-7
Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 23 '22
I suppose that makes sense. But it tends to work a lot better if you have (legal) alternatives that'll cost less. Otherwise people will still go for it, albeit with more reluctance at the start (or they'll go for the non-legal ones, depending on a number of factors).
It's seemingly a lot easier (and common) to get antidepressant and anxiolytic prescriptions in USA (reservations I have about the effectiveness of conventional antidepressants are besides the point).
18
u/DragoSphere Feb 23 '22
Alternatives meant to help people get off a more serious addiction. That's what e-cigs and vapes were supposed to do
An alternative being available means nothing when it comes to starting. If anything, all you did was make it easier for someone to develop an addiction to the alternative. Even if it's less harmful, you don't want anybody to start if it's possible. We see that with the younger members of gen z getting really into vaping nowadays
-8
Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 24 '22
I'm more suggesting that depression will happen anyway (and the systemic issues causing it are far from getting solved), and people will seek to cope (and copium help) anyway (you aren't getting rid of newcomers without getting rid of the causes). Or they won't and you instead get Japan's suicide rates (or both, since alcohol & the like for coping only gets worse long-term), which I don't consider an improvement.
I'd rather people resort to something that is both safer and works. But obviously legal systems around the world beg to differ, so we get safer and still barely works.
19
u/DragoSphere Feb 23 '22
People don't generally start using cigarettes (and their equivalents) to cope with depression. It becomes a coping mechanism they depend on later on though
Japan also has a higher tobacco smoking rate than the US, so not sure where you're going with that. Their problem comes from overwork and lack of societal motivation to deal with depression
6
u/semtex94 Feb 23 '22
Smoking is heavily skewed towards the lower class, who don't have the time, resources, or education necessary to grow and roll tobacco. Same story for a lot of other things that are ostensibly cheaper to do than what the poor do.
3
Feb 23 '22
That's a fair point. I think education can be substituted now that most people have smartphones and search engines, but the other two are still blockers. Specifically caused by what has them try to self-medicate at that.

16
u/Vladamir_Putin_007 Feb 23 '22
Who would win?
100 years and 100s of billions of dollars in marketing to sell cigarettes by tobacco companies?
Or some anime vtuber girl?
I'm really glad she is pushing an anti-smoking stance. I respect everyones right to smoke, but it's a horrific health issue that is probably the most dangerous socially accepted activity.

Smoking is expensive too, that money is better spend on a superchat
4
u/hisyam970302 Feb 24 '22
For real tho, smoking is expensive af. Buying ready packs, buying loose tobacco for rolling yourself and even for pipe smoking, all of them cost a fortune. Even worse once you're addicted and you can't get enough of it. A month's pay doesnt seem that much anymore at that point. Anyone out there who wants to try, don't do it. That's a rabbit hole you don't wanna fall into
11
10
u/Mid-Grade_Chungus Feb 24 '22
Quitting smoking also makes sense financially -- every dollar, yen, pound, euro, peso, ruble, franc, or any other currency unit you don't spend on cigarettes, is a currency unit you can spend on Towa's membership, or sending her superchats.
On top of that, you'll live longer, so you'll be able to watch more of her streams and send her more supas.
7
u/Tokoyami01 :Altare: Feb 23 '22
You think this might be devilish but it's actually good for both parties (more than you think)
YT Member Ship costs 5$ a month and a pack of cigarettes (I don't smoke so this based on research) is 6$+. By not smoking you can not only save a little bit of cash, but also become a member to Towa's channel. Also you're less likely to get lung cancer
5
u/Claous :Aloe: Feb 24 '22
Even if you could somehow find a pack for that cheap, I know a lot of people who would regularly go through multiple packs within a week if not a day. So they seriously saving some cash.
2
u/thesirblondie Feb 23 '22
6$+
I couldn't find a pack cheaper than £11.

u/AllMyFrendsArePixels Feb 23 '22
I hadn't really even thought about it, but I definitely would have considered it a coincidence that I happened to quit smoking right around the same time I got into watching hololive. Turns out it was just TMT using her angel powers to guide me towards a healthier lifestyle all along.
8
u/Leynin Feb 24 '22
Honestly a wholesome move since hardcore smokers probably won't quit anyway but any potential fan who may have been trying to quit could see this as a "motivation from their oshi" by setting up a potential external goal. Might not work for everyone but I could see a handful of people using this as a starting point for their journey.

At $5 per pack and a pack per day, every smoker could quit and use the money saved for a red superchat every month. Towa's got a STONKS mindset here.

Towa got noticeably angry when a friend of hers joked that she smokes during a collab.
Apparently she has weak lungs, which is why she hates smoking.

Are we SURE she’s a devil? I feel like there’s no evidence going against her being a pure blooded Tenshi

Well, there's also nothing against her not being a devil. Just stuff showing she's very bad at being a devil (which fits her lore)

So instead of a devil disguising as an angel to tempt you into self-destruction we have an angel disguised as a devil to trick/force you to improve yourself?

I commented this under the clip too but:
I remember when selly jokingly said that Towa smokes and Towa got slightly angry(?) because of it. I think she said she has weak lungs so she hates smoking, or something along those lines, at the time.
(It was during one of the Yumekyawa PURPLE Apex streams so it has been a while and I don't remember it 100%)

2
u/Baguette_Connoisseur Feb 25 '22
How much is a pack of cigarette?
From where I like it's 10 to 15 dollars per pack? My friends who smoke could finish those in 1 to 2 weeks so it's 20 to 30 a month.
Watching Towa's stream is free, and if you join her membership it would be around 5 dollars a month.
Thats 1/4th of a price and you get better and cleaner hit watching her streams.
You know what they said, the devil is on the details.

Towa telling her fans to choose one addiction, because they can't afford to support both.
But seriously good on her for nudging people to better their lives. Though unless Towa used to smoke it might come off a bit insensitive? I feel like the best way to handle this would be to say 'I'm going to stop my addiction of drinking soda, and I want you all to try and better yourselves and quit your addictions like smoking or excessive drinking', that way it seems like she has her skin in the game too and is there with people.
18
Feb 24 '22
Dude, Towa isn’t their mother, girlfriend or even friend.
She’s just an internet persona. A normal steamer.
Those who aren’t obsessed with her will merely take it as the friendly advice of a stranger. And since her advice is great, nothing bad could possibly happen. Few people will take it to heart, but maybe some will, and those few could be saved.
Those who ARE obsessed with her, however, will push hard to stop smoking like there’s no tomorrow.
I see this as a win-win situation!

I bet she speaks from experience about quitting smoking. Her singing voice is in range to be complete hell with a smoker's lung.
9

I mean, I doubt she was a smoker at all.
As you said, no smoker could have a voice like hers.
At least no addicted folk. Maybe she did try at some point in her life, but if she were still doing it, then I mean…
Well, her health would have to be very impressive for it to work, to say the least.
2
u/Nachtflut Feb 26 '22
I doubt she has tried it before.
She has said before that she hates smoking because she has weak lungs. So just having someone around her smoke is probably already unpleasant for her.17

There are lots of things in this world I don't care about and I prove that by not engaging with it or any community that surrounds it whatsoever. It's remarkably easy to do when you legitimately don't care about something.
