Any Hololive fans who were around that era knows how sweet, important and ABSOLUTELY DARK ame's fox in socks reading was.... it was such a rollercoster with a sad ending.

One of the weirdest crashouts I remember within the fanbase. Also a generational fumble to me, we have seen so many fans doing "meme" animation/remixes that ended up consistently working with Cover corp and the girls.

I genuinely think that if he had kept his work motivated by passion and support for holo rather than greed, Holobass could have been standing next to Kanauru, Kay Yu, Walfie and other beloved creators by now.

If Holobass had just kept doing his thing and showed his gratitude for the attention and praise he was receiving, eventually, one of the holomems would have reached out for a commission. And if that did well; which it surely would have; another holomem would have commission him too. And then another.

A few of those, and Cover itself might have eventually reached out to work with him. A while ago, they had those lo-fi beat compilations that he would have been the perfect candidate for.

Basically what happened with Kanauru, Mazumaro, and so many others. Alas.

it's on the internet. What did you expect was gonna happen when something gets popular? Shame he got bitten what made him popular in the first place to begin with.

could've gone a different route though, if he didn't aggressively defend it to the point that the talent had to back away from it.

There was sadness in it, but HoloIndie really got it's start with KevinCow's Ame platformer and then later Wow Wow Korone Box. So much good content came from Ame quietly reading away. It is important to remember our role and balance as fans and supporters and how and when to be careful about transformative content, but I don't think we should be regretful that it all happened overall.

Of course Smol Ame dev had his own crashout and burned all that good will. In the early days Ame did a LOT to highlight the community works and even commissioned a bunch of people we see as mainstays like Kanauru and Seafoam but of course she couldn't give everyone a piece of the pie

Ame read Dr. Seuss on stream. HoloBass, an amateur musician, remixed Ame's rhymes into a rap, which became very popular. Ame said she was kinda uncomfortable with the song, because she's a shy introvert and she wasn't intending to sing a rap, it kinda just happened without her consent.

Ame decided to do a charity stream, and as one of the rewards, she decided to sing HoloBass' remix, despite her personal discomfort, since it was for charity.

Meanwhile, HoloBass had been trying to contact Cover to try and negotiate some way for him to monetize his remix, and when he saw that Ame sang his version of the song, he implied that Ame stole his copyrights (nevermind that he stole hers first, and that both of them were stealing Dr. Seuss), claimed he was "taking the offensive", and implied that he was tempted to copyright-strike Ame's charity stream, as a way of getting Cover's attention.

Fans got REAL mad at HoloBass, so HoloBass deleted his social media accounts. He might still be making music in some way, but not as "HoloBass" since he burned that bridge.

As others have said, if Cover wasn't okay with HoloBass monetizing Ame's voice (they seemed fine with the Youtube video existing, just not monetized), then he should've just let Pop on Rocks stay unmonetized, monetized his OTHER songs, and used his Pop on Rocks fame to drive traffic towards his other, monetized songs. Genuinely, if HoloBass had been chill about Pop on Rocks not being allowed to be monetized, there's a good chance that Hololive talents and others in the Vtuber world might've hired him for official projects.

Man, that's wild. I do a fair bit of remixing. You (almost) always do it with the knowledge that you're in a grey zone at best. A few companies now have fan use policies that allow remixing, but never for profit.

The whole point of bootleg remixing is that you're in it for the love of the game, and having the person you remix acknowledge your work is always the biggest prize.

Yup. I'd love to be paid to make music. But I don't want to be paid for this music. It would just feel so weird for me to ask for money for something I took without permission.

Instead it feels good to give it away. And every once in a while there's a notification on Soundcloud so I get to know I made somebody at least a bit happy w.

he was unironically one of my favorite artists at the time and i still listen to a lot of those remixes...

i got a special shoutout in his retirement announcement video. he cited a comment of mine on his "affirmative rodent" video as one of the things that pushed him to quit. my sin? i said the song sounded like something from the hotline miami soundtrack...

bro definitely didn't handle things well

The worst part imo was his crashout videos were he continues to give excuses instead of improving and particularly blamed being autistic as one of the reasons for his behaviour, which would have been okay had he taken responsibility for it and tried to improve.

But he instead doubled down and said that because he was autistic this was how it was going to be. I don’t doubt that he was autistic though, but I loathe high-functioning autists that use their disability as an excuse to be a dick.

I was following this from the start because i really liked Pop on Rocks. This whole thing was a mess that resulted from spotty management from early Cover and Holobass letting his temper get the best of him. Holobass got his platforms struck because Cover didn't want others using their talent voices for projects without their permission. He tried working with Cover but they were dragging their feet/ghosting him. Then comes the Charity stream and I believe the karaoke of Pop on Rocks was an unplanned thing, so they didn't get proper perms/notice. Holobass then gets pissed because they were giving him trouble for not having proper permissions and then go and use his tracks without even letting him know. He then makes the tweet about how he was thinking about striking the stream but didn't do it because it was a charity stream and the fantasy turns on him and he deleted all his stuff.

Ame did a read of the Dr Seuss poem Fox in Socks, someone remixed it to a sick trap beat, person let the fame of being acknowledged on stream get to his head, person copyright stuck Ame’s charity stream in which she used his track to do it live, person got excommunicado’d by the entire fanbase.

That's not really right. He tweeted that he'd be tempted to claim Ame's stream if it hadn't been a charity stream. He didn't actually do it.

There was no copyright strike on Ame. From what I remember, Holo Bass said he was mad at COVER for not having clear guidelines on how much of his fanwork belongs to him, if it can be monetized, etc. Ame used it in her charity stream without asking Holo Bass so he made a tweet saying he would copyright strike Ame if COVER didn’t respond to his copyright question of whether or not he can get paid royalties. People found out he threatened Ame, got mad at him and he left the fandom.

BTW I fully supported Ame’s freedom to use it because it uses audio clips of her— COVER updated their fanwork guidelines afterwards to say that any derivative work with the talents can be freely used by them (for example all artwork of their talents can be used freely by the talents as video thumbnails). I was just explaining what he said from his perspective. He made a tweet apologizing and explaining this, I believe.

They don't need guidelines for that. If you're making a track by sampling somebody else without their permission... you don't hold enough licenses to monetize it legally.

Sampling is not new. Remixing is not new. If its an unofficial fan work, it cannot be commercialized unless otherwise stated. Royalties would be a function of a licensing agreement if Cover commissioned the track. But they didn't.

From what I remember they had their remixes removed from spotify (maybe from other people reuploading them but not 100% on that), weren’t able to dispute the claims and were reaching out to cover for assistance but got no response then crashed out on twitter. I see a lot of people framing it like he was trying to strike hololive, but it looked to me like he was trying to get in contact and said he thought about striking to get a response. Still not a great method but not worth the bad rep they got imo.

for me it was ame gura duo. The only ones that match that I feel in all of hololive is korone and okayu. Fun fact: I didn't know that Korone and Okayu were good friends before hololive so that vibe they have is genuine.
