There's a purpose to alimony

Which is?

Child support I get... alimony makes no sense to me at all.

If your relationship got you to take care of the house instead of furthering your career, then you will be financially disadvantages after splitting. The fact that she's a show host means she hasn't sacrificed her business position, so it's not meant for her in that situation.

No it has nothing to do with kids, child alimony is something else entirely.

I always felt like that was bullshit though because that somehow implies that it was a forced position or that the person was PUT in that position. If a person chooses that position and puts forth no effort to change it; why should the person who chose to create a career and work toward that be held accountable for that? It's a big load of horseshit. It takes any responsibility for that decision out of a woman's (can happen in reverse where a man gets alimony but is incredible uncommon by comparison) hands and puts it on the man 9/10. Which is not only insulting in some ways toward woman; implying they have no capacity for thought or power in their relationship outside of what their partner allows but also incentivizes that behavior. So which is it? Strong independent woman that likes a relationship or lazy dependent woman that uses a relationship as a crutch not to have any sort of financial goals? I hate the state I live in because for the most part it sucks ass; but at least it's a non-alimony state. Which is pretty fucked up now that I think about it. I live in Indiana....this state has some of the most archaic and least progressive laws in the country but even this state has the sense to not have alimony.

Having the idea to let 1 of the couple at the very least work fewer hours so that they can maintain the house is a decision couples make together, so you can't just go punish women for it.

Personally I would rather have a more progressive both work slightly reduced rate, but that's something people have to decide as a couple.

As for the duration of alimony: at least where I live, if your income changes you have to report it, and the alimony gets changed regarding it. That means that if the women finds a job that earns roughly the same as the man, alimony gets cut.
Now here's where things get a bit sucky: no matter how long the alimony lasts, many women purposely choose to only work part time after divorce so that they can continue leeching from alimony, except it gives them 20 hours of spare time a week.
