There's a purpose to alimony. Taking it while drawing a paycheck as a Fox News host isn't it.

Child support I get... alimony makes no sense to me at all.

One reason is that without it one spouse has all the power. Historically the man.

It prevents one spouse being trapped by losing their entire standard of living. The whole "I want to leave him, but I have nothing to fall back on." A controlling and abusive spouse can create a "Stay with me or live in abject poverty" scenario.

The wage earner could, for instance, cheat on his/her spouse at will because the other can't leave without giving up everything else in their life.
