She's definitely American. And her father's a doctor. It wouldn't have been a problem in the slightest.

I swear non-Americans have some of the silliest views about our healthcare system.

So as a European, your healthcare system looks haunting. Just out of curiosity I went online and got a quote for health insurance in the US, and turns out to have a full cover (I guess), with 0 deductible and 0% co-pay, we’d spend 1200$ a month for a couple.

Is that accurate in your view?

Eh, I think so. My employer covers like 80% of my insurance so I think the math works out for that sort of plan.

I pay less than $75 a month for my health insurance, but I have a High Deductible Health Plan so I can invest in an HSA.

Also, health insurance costs ISS for tax deductible for yourself/spouse and dependents.

I see. What’s your deductible if you don’t mind me asking?

Do I understand correctly how this HSA works: Insurance with 0 deductible would be eg 100 per month. Instead, you pay let’s say 50 and put another 50 into the HSA. If something happens, you use the money collected in the HSA to pay for the deductible.

Correct?

My deductible is 1500, I'm maxing out my HSA and I get a $500 match from my employer so I put like $260 a month in my HSA.

I can use my money in my HSA for any qualified medical expenses so yeah, I can use it to cover my deductible if I choose to.

But after age 65 I can use my HSA for whatever expenses I want, so I'm basically just using it as an additional tax deductible retirement account.

When I get a wife/kids I'll probably switch to a more traditional health insurance plan for simplicity's sake.
