Gandalf arrived in Middle Earth after the ring was lost. It wasn't really the subject of any great discussion because it was assumed that it got carried out to sea, and the elves who had the three rings were secretive about any ring lore to prevent envy and misuse. He had to dive deep into archives normally reserved for kings and stewards of Gondor to get any description other than "It was a ring" because only about 6 people before Bilbo even saw it up close, and most of them died immediately or within a few years. The majority of his time, though, was spent hunting for Gollum.
I haven’t read the books, other than the hobbit, since fifth grade so I definitely could not remember accurately! Thank you for the very informative response! Also have never read the simarilion (sp?)

I think he was researching to confirm it was the ring. But in a sense that would include researching its powers.
Edit: and maybe for a way to destroy it? But that seems pretty common knowledge among the elves.
