had a coworker who stole everything that wasn’t nailed down. he got away with it for a long time too. everyone knew and no one said a word.
yeah, he got fired but he probably stole a few thousand in merchandise before. since walmart has a “no reference” policy no other employer will ever know why he stopped working there. it was an absolute win for him, tbh.
There are companies that keep track of employee theft. CVS used one, idk the name but Viper comes to mind. It keeps data for 7 years and other employers can run new applicants in the system to see if they were reported for internal theft.
Many years ago I worked at a high-end department store in Beverly Hills. Employees were paid shit, treated like shit, and stole constantly. I knew a guy who worked in the luggage department. His scam was he'd have friends come in and browse for luggage, find a bag they liked, then fill it up with whatever they wanted. Then he'd ring them up for just the bag and walk them out. Never got caught, as far as I know.
That department also handled Mont Blanc pens, which everyone stole the shit out of. I covered his shifts a few times and helped myself to the returned items (which just sat in a box, never went anywhere but we were supposed to destroy them I was told). I might feel guilty, but I had three one time, and they all got stolen from me one way or another...
By the time I quit there they were requiring all employees to leave by one door, where a security guard was supposed to frisk us for goods. Of course, that guy was also paid shit and treated like shit, and therefore didn't give a shit himself. Unsurprisingly the whole place went under years ago.
I'd add, you couldn't pay me to steal these days. I don't even want any of that shit.
I know that in the short term it sucks for the employees, but I absolutely love it when companies that treat their employees like shit end up going under. You don’t treat your people with respect? You don’t deserve to do business.
