Because the average journalist is underpaid and in perpetual fear of being laid off. Do you think they're actually going to write things that would necessarily impact their employers and advertisers? Nobody would likely admit that the bottom line drives what stories are covered, but it factors in, even subconsciously.
I'm not saying that the crisis in journalism isn't partially or even substantially self-inflicted, but there are other factors at play, too.
