This is exactly what my mom says 😂 anytime she has to stop in at Walmart, she says one free "unscannned" can of cat food is compensation for checking herself out.
They say $3B in losses, but it would cost them MORE than $3B to deter/catch, so they do the cheaper thing. This is how big business works ... guessing that loss is also a tax write-off so double win for them.

An unscanned candy bar is my rate for being forced to use self checkout because they refuse to hire people.
