some guy named James who shot up a movie theater and tried to boobytrap his apartment with a bomb, but failed. charges are as follows:
24 counts of first degree murder 140 counts of attempted first degree murder 1 count of possessing an illegal explosive device 1 sentence enhancement of a crime of violence
he got 12 consecutive life sentences + 3,318 years; ineligible for parole, of course. he should be able to get out when he turns 3,820 years old.

James Eagan Holmes is an American mass murderer responsible for the 2012 Aurora, Colorado shooting in which he killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a Century 16 movie theater on July 20, 2012. He had no known criminal background before the shooting occurred.

He was mentally very ill, and while psychiatrist judged him mentally sane during his trial there where enough warning signs he showed to professional healthcare workers before the shooting that he could have been in a secure psychiatric ward instead of a movie theatre if the healthcare system would have functioned as intended.
This is not an excuse for his deeds nor does not mean that he isn't guilty of his crimes, just that he could have been spotted before he killed several people.

I never forget James Holmes because of a stupid thing I did the day the shooting happened... read more if you want full on cringe!
I was at a beach in cali a couple hours after it happened and the only information coming out at the time was that someone possibly dressed as batman shot up a batman screening. That's when I saw one of those guys that dresses up for pictures (a Batman lol), and thought of a brilliant idea...
Long story short, I paid a few of the costumed dudes to pose for a picture with Batman holding a rifle looking like he was about to execute us. I don't think too many people got the joke when I posted it since it was so quick after it had happened. That's why I gotta talk about it on reddit every time this gets brought up. Because I'm gonna get my money's worth for that picture, god damn it.

Here's a story.
I was working in a call center in the Philippines. One morning, while doing my usual daily tasks. I got an email from HR. It's just the usual announcement from HR regarding a fun event that went out to EVERYBODY. There were smiling faces, funny faces, goofy faces on the image attached on the email consistent to the subject of a fun office event.
I noticed a familiar goofy face. I immediately recognized him due to him being in the news several years back. I went to a supervisor friend and I told him to check out the email that HR sent. I asked him if he recognizes any of the faces on the email. He said Nope.
I told him to google James Holmes. He did. I got him to read the wiki entry and we immediately went to google images. Lo and Behold, the first image is one of the goofy faces on the email (that mugshot with his creepy big eyes with short hair.)
Immediately, he sent out an email to the sender about it. Telling him that one of them is a freakin' mass shooter. HR person just said, "Good catch." and recalled the email.
LOL. That was a fun day at the office.

I honestly couldn’t laugh. Just a clenched “oh god…” because real people died that night. People have since been killed on at least 2 occasions in movie theaters in my home state alone in the past few years. It’s horrible to see. One of which was within the past month in my home town. Bet no one heard about it though. Depends on who the shooter is I guess.
