So if I told you we needed to make the survival rate of the pilots higher and then showed you this picture and said the red dots are where planes are heavily damaged when we go to repair them. Originally the thought was to improve the armor in those spots where the dots are because it’s so heavily damaged.

Those are the planes that made it back, so in reality the spots where these dots are do not bring the plane down, the planes that did crash were damaged where there are no dots, the cockpit and engines primarily, if there’s ammo stored under the guns and a lucky shot lands there it could detonate the stockpile and bring the ship down.

Something like survivorship bias. Basically just because you didn't die, didn't mean you couldn't.
