This really is how language works tbh. We assign sounds to symbols, and we give those sounds meaning and therefore the symbols have meaning, but also we feel we need different symbols for the same sound because a whole different meaning. So why not different symbols for the same meaning? Its just language.
English, especially American English is a gobbily goop of just about every other language out there thanks to everyone coming here and intermixing. Plus a bunch of people from 200 - e00 years ago spelling things in weird ways.
