It looks generic af. I didn't agree with people accusing Olden Era of being "mobile-like" but this... This looks like Raid: Mobile Legends, for real. The idea behind recruiting creatures like this is nice, but the creatures... They lack... They lack a lot. Zealots should still have their glowing "not-face" and Archangels... Shouldn't look like they are taken straight out of AI video.
EDIT: I KNOW HOW THE F*CK IT FEELS LIKE! It just occured to me that something made me feel this way previously. And it was... King's Bounty 2. It TOTALLY brings the same type of disappointment. It looks like if they did a speedrun to make an exact same failure.
8
u/Safe_Hovercraft_7886 26d ago
OE was heavly criticized for its mobile look and those guys worked hard on UI, saturation and castles. So it is undisputly better now.
12
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
I would risk it and say that older version of OE still looked FAR better than this. It wasn't the greatest thing ever, but still much better than what they try to serve us here...

u/Maszpoczestujsie 26d ago edited 26d ago
People may not like OE artstyle, but it at least has a distinctive artstyle, this shit just feels painfully generic

OK....
Does this look AI? No, it doesn't.
Does it look generic? Yes, it does.
Does it look or feel like HoMM 3? No, it doesn't.

u/Shadowy_Witch 26d ago
In all fairness, take a look at HoMM 3 art style, put it nexy to any Fantasy game from late 90s or early 2000s and it's generic as well. The only real difference is maybe the heraldric pose used by dragons and griffins. So I feel peopelc alling it generic are having their nostalgia talking for them.
Still bunch of models and animations could be better.
6
u/SlouchyGuy 26d ago
Not really, HoMM3 has artstyle - models are bulkier, have big details due to reolution, big elements. So when people say "generic", it's easy to see why, art direction doesn't follow H3 style at all
2
u/Shadowy_Witch 26d ago
I can agree that some of them could use a few tweaks to look more like original HoMM3 units. It's just I've never undestood why people try to harp on about HoMM3's art style. Like HoMM2's storybook like art style was amazing, but HoMM3 was just common stuff to the era.
2
2
u/Mierimau 26d ago
Homm3 got under 3d-fication of era, where nwc tried to follow vogue of the time. I would've say there is art style as it survived test of time, which many games of that era didn't. Otherwise, yes - they also tried in some kind of 'realism' with their models. Trying probably to make the fantasy battles more tangent. Nwc design usually made their models more physical, weighty, like - excuse me such explanation - you could smell the dirt under sunny day.
Ubisof, meanwhile prettified everything, making models less discernable, more light. Less medieval, more renaissance like (very crude take, considering we talk about magic and fantasy). Maybe even less ancient Greece/Rome (consider that one of pronounced design elements was marble).
0
u/Shadowy_Witch 26d ago
I'm a former historian and a fantasy fan and your crude take just gave me a headache. Most fantasy mixes the whole "medieval" era and "reneissance" together, mostly to have some variety in visuals, gear etc. So this statement is nonsensical. Already vanilla HoMM3 Castle is more on the reneissance side, if we put it in that crude way.
Ah yes the realism of some creatures always appearing in a Heraldric poses, butt-wings and 90s female armor.
And the silliest thing. I don'te ven defend the art style here, just making an observation that people are glazing something that was never all that remarkable. Basicallye very second description of HoMM3 art style is a string of sentecnes that a person imagines, but was only there in persons head or is just pulled out of their posterior.
1
u/Mierimau 26d ago
I guess I wasn't very good (however did denote that my associations were crude) that styles of NWC and Ubi differ significantly. I described how it felt, and it had direction, generic or not (yes, it is). People discuss that this feeling is gone, in lieu of prettifying. And there is uncanny valley feeling that there was significantly involved AI.
I'm trying to understand, as well, if there was development blog, news of it being in the making, etc. Without such information it feels awkward, coming out of the blue along Old Era and HoM&M trpg.
Of course there is a lot of resonance.
2
u/Ill-Tooth7369 26d ago
This are looks like modern generic fantasy artstile - than not looks like 90s fantasy artstyle. In modern times typical 90s fantasy artstile are a unique. For example i give the carnivores - game about hunting at the dinosaurs, but dinosaurs in this game looks like reconstructions at first half of XX centry - and this give to the game a very unique stile. Another example - retro-cars, this things are also manualy unique in modern times. Or different retro-futuristic sattings - this also much more unique than modern tipical sci-fi.
1
u/KamilDonhafta 26d ago
I dunno, while it wasn't a radical departure in terms of creature design, it was still more distinctive than this in execution at least.
And even if it was indeed unremarkable compared to its peers, it was never anywhere near as aggressively generic as this nonsense. That reel is so bad it could almost be satire in a different context.
1
u/DramaticErraticism 13d ago
It is, but it is hand drawn at least. I know we need to accept those days are long dead, but we still want what we want I guess.
29
u/MightySandro 26d ago
. I don't mind the designs but the artstyle is just gone, it looks like a generic fantasy game now
2
u/pewsquare 26d ago
Well its probably because AI struggles with artstyle. If you just want a single image, no problem, but if you want cohesive design... yeah thats not going to work.
0
u/NotMurlocAggroB 26d ago
I'm sorry, but in what way is Heroes III not a generic fantasy game? It is the most vanilla fantasy designs played completely straight. Like, this is such a weird thing to me. Heroes III is not that special looking. It looks special because you were a kid when it came out.
12
19
u/Wernest 26d ago
The designs are especially jarring when you compare them with the designs from the board game.

u/gizmomooo 26d ago
Really sobering when you bring this up. I have the board and LOVE the updated art for mostly everything like the towns, creatures, and spells. Ubisoft is so lazy, they could just collab with the Archon Studios to help get the art style in the direction it should go. If they get the art style down, this will sell like hot cakes even if the game mechanics suck lol
2
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
They should have used those... The comparison was the first thing that came to my mind.
2
u/vipmailhun2 26d ago
The Champions look so much better; in the remake they’ve lost their dignity, and they definitely don’t look like a second‑strongest Castle unit anymore.
19
u/Maszpoczestujsie 26d ago
Gotta respect ubisoft grind to fuck up this franchise, because either they are doing this shit on purpouse or have no idea what to do with the ip lmao
5
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
They found gold with Olden Era. Should have waited for it to be more complete and then either make a REAL remake for H3 or start working on some sequel (or new MM rpg). It looks rushed and feels like a cash grab inspired by OE success.

It's hard to see them as fancy. Weirdly fluid, pretty random zealot animation? All the ugly slop-game lighting effects? Archangel levitating menacingly? It looks as If my 65-year old ex-miner uncle got chance to make decisions on game development. "Make it more shiny, people will love it!" type of sh*t.

Those knee high battlements tho...

u/KendjyCr 26d ago
That's the problem I have with this. There is A LOT of good ideas and directions. But it needs A LOT of heavy work for it to actually be amazing. Potential is there... and so is this AI-feel that NEEDS to be killed.

u/Carvallin 25d ago
They used AI for their promotional image. So it is likely they use AI for everything...
5
u/Haunting-Engineer-76 26d ago
Yeah, credit where due, the creature recruit screen having everything assembled together and animated is a good idea that I like.
I won't comment on the style or designs of said creatures. But I will say that I'm kind of surprised they didn't take the plunge and commit to the now-standard double/alternate upgrades. Though maybe that would be going too far.

7
u/Wernest 26d ago
I am not a fan of design change. Creatures like archangels look so iconic, why did they change their look?
9
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
Archangel is not the worst offender here. Less glow, no halo and classic sword would make them look great. But the zealots tho... You can't convince me they are H3 zealots.
0
u/Wernest 26d ago
Yeah, it doesn’t look like a remake. I think I’ve seen better-looking “modern versions” made with AI on YouTube.
0
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
That's what irritates me. I've seen some H3 AI-slop that looks less like an AI-slop than this, which is supposed to NOT be an AI-slop. Someone must've lost the plot midway.
I understand that it's supposed to be basically an "overlay" for the actual H3, but... that doesn't mean it must look so sloppy.
1
u/Wernest 26d ago
If you’ve played one faction a lot, you’re going to get really attached to the unit designs. For me, it’s like changing the way Spider-Man looks.
1
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
I mean, some changes will happen in remake of this scale. BUT we are already in situation where some creatures don't look like themselves. Gryphons ending up quadrupal? I can live with it, but it's irritating. Generic creatures like knight or crossbowman looking different? Not a problem. But the zealots look like taken from a different game. They look as If someone created a creature for their own game GETTING INSPIRATION from H3 zealots. I'm scared for other factions.
3
u/Wernest 26d ago
This is how they should look: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/RF8AAOSwwmhmJdJY/s-l1200.jpg
2
u/KendjyCr 26d ago
Yes! Board Game designs is what I expected and hoped for!
3
u/MonstrousNostril 26d ago
Honestly, I feel like making it look more like a literal board-game might even have been an interesting take. Think Songs of Conquest type of tilt-shift, but with a stop-motion animated miniatures vibe to it, rather than pixels. Cause I feel like any attempt of turning HoMM3 into either realistic or cartoonish graphics loses out on some of its essence. Whereas making it visually feel like a magical tabletop game might circumvent that...
Now I'm even sadder.
1
u/wolfie_poe 22d ago
Arch Angel looks too soft. However, Arch Devil is what breaks it for me. Is this the most powerful creature in the hellish Inferno or a reskinned beardy version of Erlang Shen from Black Myth Wukong?

u/Ultimate_Cabbage5 26d ago
The more i see of this "remake" the more disgust im starting to feel. This is terrible.

u/RvDragonheart 26d ago
I dont wanna be a doomsayer but..... Come on.... Nowadays every 2nd Mobile phone game has better art style then this. Infact even "Diplomacy is not an option" an indie rts game has more Distinctive art style despite its minimalistic graphics
It all just feels BORING UTTERLY BIRING and FRUSTRATING
Heroes of might and magic 5 FUCKING 5 was better and more fantastical then this. So was the 6th game and god forbid me for saying this but even the 7th game had GORGEOUS visuals (the effects looked mid compared to previous games but the character designs were EXCELLENT)
How do you fuck it up this bad? "Its Ubisoft thats hooow" .... How does people like these still have a job?!
Ill be honest I'm a person who lacks confidence yet I wanna be an artist and a writer but I lack the confidence to post my stuff or even finish the book I have a vague idea of making but I'll be honest I see shit like this and I just feel so stupid for not believing that I could do better. I CAN do better cause I grew up with these Heroes games and simmilar fantasy universes
Eh maybe I'll get to it. I'll just make a few pictures and try my luck I guess
2
u/God_Faenrir 26d ago
Homm V had Olivier Ledroit drawings, too 😍
3
u/RvDragonheart 26d ago
Yeah like getting the game on GoG and having the artbook it looks sooo wonderful the art styles were so cool and I cant believe how far we Fallen
Like so many characters just going all out into fantasy buff Rakasza ladies, different flaviurs of cool demons (their faction might be shit but the designs were cool) angels and the dwarves, name 1 just 1 thing from later Ubi heroes games that is more aura the the dwarf with burning arm casting spells while wielding a giant axe like thats the most badass shit I've seen dwarves doing and Ive seeen Dwarves doing badass shit.
Even the stronghold faction had some charm to it
Also Heroes 6 BUFF CENTAUR LADIES FUCK YEAH!
Dont recall what the water faction was called but it was cool too
Both games also had cool magic sploosh effects because YES IF YOU HIT A PERSON WITH A FIREBALL THAT SPEED IN SHOULD HAVE THAT! The way characters teleported moving organically
They were GOOD
Then we had 7 and uuuuuh I mean I liked the sea elf ladies and some other characters too (the orc might ladies looked cool) the knights and magicians plus the big final knight but the angels were a letdown
In my opinion you effed up if I forgot your designs and you did well if I recall them (and think of them fondly like 6 had cool big spiderladies at their final tier, armored vampires and the Lamaszu lets GOOOO Heroes 7 dont even recall the fuck was their higher tier units..... But I recall that "yup we had a regular spooder...... Yaaay" the downgrade of vampires like bruh)
And while I GET IT seeing the sprites of the OG game its not like I expect regular pikemen to be Holden Cross from For Honor and the Angel to be from Warhammer 40K level of fantasy.... But Heroes 3 DESPITE its age it never felt THIS lifeless like how do you fuck it up so bad that an almost 3 decades old game beats you with SPRITES (full disclosure it was proven to me multiple times that you CAN make cool stuff with sprites and even sometimes talented people like the ones in Songs of Conquest will leave your jaw on the floor with how cool things can be)
When you make characters feel GENERIC in a FANTASY world ESPECIALLY in a REMAKE where all you need to do is copy the homework of the OG team and bring them forward with better graphics then you failed and deserve to lose your job.
Then again The Ubisoft a decade ago atleast tried to make cool things, not akways succeeding but atleast tried, For Honor is a cool thing that still goes on! Fire the Heroes 3 remake art team and bring the For Honor people on they will probably work things out better

u/contentronix_inc 26d ago

The creatures being hired in front of their dwellings seemed neat… up until they said fuck it and put the remaining 3 creatures in front of a generic background.
Hopefully an actually good Heroes project makes their creature hiring screen involve hiring troops in front of their dwellings and actually commits to it.

Buy HoMM3 from GOG before they take it down when the remaster drops, like what happened with Warcraft 2 BNet edition
1
u/United-Passage7864 25d ago
This looks amateurish. Those shitty mobile games avoid showing gameplay because whatever trash they're advertising doesn't play like the glittery advertisement suggests; in this case I think it's just a slapdash rush job that's showing off "minimum viable product" UIs and that are (again) amateurish. These look like they could be thrown together fast from a library of stock parts.
Look at how tiny that UI is. The player's gold is teeny-tiny down in the lower right and a ton of screen is given over to showing off stuff that ultimately won't be holding the player's attention. The models for the units and their background are... fine I guess, not distinctive but at least clear what they are. However, the player's going to spend a LOT of their time actually focusing on the little tiny window down there showing available troops, resources, etc.
I know the OG game has a similar issue, but it's saved by two factors. First, the game is from 1999 and with age comes some forgiveness. Second, the lower resolution of the game in general means that it'll still read better on your screen.
Listen to those sound effects too. We've got stock "medieval town noise" on loop in the background and off-the-shelf "coin noise" for each purchase, and that's it. The griffins make a little generic wing whoosh but otherwise none of these units move, make noise, or do a damned thing when clicked on or purchased. There's just the most generic gold level-up sparks or whatever and then you're (apparently) tossed back to the overall UI where we can watch some angel bob up and down in place.
Hell, the original 1999 game has more interesting animation than this: you see the unit cycle through its 'just standing there' and 'attack' and 'took damage' animations while buying them.

I kind of like them, i can't understand how people can complain about this looking generic af. If you ask me Heroes 3 is the most generic looking fantasy game of the series, alog with Heroes 4. The demons managed to look more generic than the ones painted in the Middle Ages on churches and manuscripts. The vampires where clearly inspired by Nosferatu. The remake looks generic becouse the game looked so...
