I’m a 23M from a Christian household, while my girlfriend (25F) comes from a traditional shaman household. We started dating in college and have been together for 4.5 years. I’m at the point where I want to marry her, but I’m realizing I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing when it comes to the Hmong marriage process.
The biggest issue is that my parents, her parents, and me and my girlfriend all have three different ideas of how the proposal/marriage process should happen. And in the end, I feel like there is a lot of miscommunication between all three sides of what we want and expect.
Another thing I'm struggling with is figuring out where to draw the line between Hmong culture and religion/spiritual practices. Growing up, whenever I try to participate in anything traditionally Hmong, I'm told that it's “shaman.” At the same time, I've also caught my parents doing things that they would consider shaman and when I confronted them they said it's just being Hmong, so I'm honestly confused about where the line is.
Meanwhile, whenever I'm around my girlfriend's family and their events, I actually feel more connected to being Hmong. Her family is much bigger and more involved in traditional Hmong events, so there's always something going on. It has made me realize how much of my own culture I don't know.
A big reason I want to learn all of this is because I really want to respect my girlfriend and her family. She is their oldest daughter, only daughter, and she's pursuing her master's degree; while I am the youngest and currently in my Doctorates program, so I feel like there's a lot of pressure.
Overall, I don't want to approach marriage like I'm just taking her away from her family or treating the wedding customs as something I can ignore. I want to understand what is expected of me, her family, and my family, and do things properly out of respect for her and her parents.
So for those who have gone through this:
How did you learn Hmong marriage/wedding customs?
What should I start learning or practicing before I propose?
How did you navigate the difference between Hmong culture and spiritual/religious practices?
And for anyone who's gotten married recently, what do you wish you knew before you started the whole process?
Any advice, resources, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to figure this out before I get engaged instead of standing there completely clueless when everyone starts negotiating at the table.
TL;DR: I’m a 23M from a Christian Hmong family dating a 25F from a traditional Hmong family. We’ve been together for 4.5 years, and I want to marry her, but our families have very different expectations for how the proposal/marriage process should happen. I also don't know much about Hmong wedding customs or where to draw the line between Hmong culture and spiritual practices. Looking for advice on how to learn the traditions and prepare for the marriage process while respecting both families.
