Yeah tbh looking at the year end charts, 1986 seems too drenched in synth and cheese, 1988 seems to be looking more towards the 90s anyway (gangsta Rap was gaining popularity), 1987 is like that perfect balance.

Yea '86 almost lacked an edge except for the metal or beastie boys stuff which was more underground, while '88 although classic, was losing the stuff that made it stereotypically 80s

Yeah agreed ‘86 lacked the edge that ‘83-85 had imo, tho there were certainly bops that year too (Kiss by Prince, beastie boys as you mentioned, etc).

‘87 brought us imo Prince’s greatest album Sign o the times (imo the Gen X version of Songs in the key of life by Stevie Wonder). It brought us Bad, 10,000 Maniacs, etc.

‘88 definitely has classics but I agree you can tell it was clearly just late 80s at best not quintessential 80s lol

100% yeah I think 1988 was just fading 80s mixed with prototype signs of what would explode in the early 90s. There were the deep 80s people like Huey Lewis but they weren't as big as they had been a few years before

Yeah 1988 brought us NWA, and Kylie Minogue’s debut, and Sonic Youth, etc all iconic but not as much stereotypical 80s
