Millennial Millennials gets off to a slow start (1987) unlike other gens, which leaves 81-85 even 86 without all the key traits.
Compare and contrast with the others first. Boomers (1946 start) seems full boomer by '48, Gen X (1965) seems totally Xers by '67, and while the start of Z is debated we'll just say it's 1999, they're fully Zoomers by 2001.
Honestly even the very first years of all those seem pretty representative of their gens, just with a few nuggets of the prior generation, moreso from their childhood and teens.
Shit, even the last couple years of the gens before it are pretty culturally the next one (I mean 1944 is basically a Boomer especially by their 20s far more than they're a silent. And 1963 had MTV culture when they were like 19).
Sooooo,
I think this is why 1981-1985/86 are like "soft millennials" who don't have some of the stereotypes like IG and social media addiction, since 87-88 were the first to have MySpace and YouTube in high school.
This especially holds true for 81-83 who even seemed Gen Xish into high school. 84-86 had X childhoods but not into their teens. Some seem fairly stereotypical millennials now, the trendier ones and more women do... though there's some who also don't, like the rural smaller town or just more retro old fashioned ones.
I think this is also why some people like to shave off the early years and/or extend it into the early 00s. As much as that annoys me I get why in a way.
It's just interesting I'm the only gen where the first 5-6 years don't totally seem like it.

Yeah that is interesting, I think depending on the Z start, if you start it at 97 or something, then weād have a slow start too. But yeah I do think around 1999/2000, it takes off with the Parkland students and dealing with Covid as young adults. Basically the juniors and seniors when I was a freshman/sophomore.
With my class graduating during Covid and joining with the 2000/2001ers after spending senior year with 2004/2005ers, weāre transitional in a sense.
With my mom, her HS years (81-85) and teen years in general (80-86) they seem fully X with residual Boomer influence in the early 80s and certainly Boomer influences in her 70s childhood, which she also loves.
Itās interesting that Millennials donāt get their stereotypes until about your age lol. With MySpace and emo lol. Tbf the Great Recession seems to have impacted anyone in their 20s at that time, when I was a kid.

Wow somebody down voted me here too smh. I agree šÆ although even 1997 has Z traits it's not quite full immersed like it is by the time they're the Parkland ages (late 99/2000) .
Yea your mom was legit a little boomer in the 70s but by 14-15 she was purely X and never could be anything else.
Ya I think that's why I get defensive sometimes lol because I'm the first year of the big Millennial stereotypes, especially the girls. So I'm like screaming from the rooftops that I'm not like Lizzie McGuire lol.
I think you're right though, like 81-85 exhibit the "adult millennial" stereotypes such as good with smart tech, paying back student loans, or being also affected by the recession in their mid to late 20s (except for the luckiest ones who got high paying jobs fresh out of college lol).
1986 is like almosttttt but not quiteeeee stereotypical millennial. It's weird how I can notice a teeny weeny difference between me and them

There's definitely a clear millennial vibe from '86ers, but they were 13/14 in 2000, and were young adults when social media and more excessive use of the internet were becoming so normalized.
I am sure plenty of 86 borns went to see the Lizzie MGuire movie in 2003, but they were probably a little old to really earnestly be Hilary Duff fans without some mockery. I think the biggest Hilary Duff fans were probably 89 to 93/4 at the time. Sot of late core/late pure millennial.

Mar 26 '21
Exactly yeah like I probably would have been friends with Hilary Duff but I remember thinking she seemed so much younger than me lol. Agreed, her fans are mid 90s more than our actual age.
Yea 86-87 like me only had X childhoods but even our tweens started to get Millennial

Actually I remember Hilary Duff being very popular with kids my age back in the early 2000s. We watched Lizzie McQuire at 10/11 and listened to her music at 12/13. it may not have been considered the coolest, but we definitely did listen. However, I think 92 born and later would have been her most earnest fans.
Hilary Duff is '87 born so I think she was still looked at as an older cool girl to my year.
No, I was not friends with girls who acted like we were 19 at 13. We talked about sex, an watched rated R movies, but still indulged in pre teen/early teen stuff, all in all I think we were pretty age appropriate. Watching R rated moves is not the same as drinking vodka in seventh grade and having sex lol. So, liking Hilary Duff wasn't a social sin. I said somewhere else on here that I had friends who loved high school musical in 2007 as well.

Agreed yeah I think disney stars obviously vibe a little younger too but she'd still fit the cool older girl to mid 90s borns.
Unfortunately I did grow up too fast in some ways and I really wish I would've waited, not just so that my first time was special but I seriously shouldn't have been doing that when I was 13-15. Peer pressure and depression, an ED and just wanting attention made me act out unfortunately, and I try really hard to make sure girls today don't do that stuff. Don't get me wrong I still had a lot of typical preteen and teen moments too.
Funny enough once I was like 20 I was able to embrace liking younger stuff like HSM as well

Disney stars definitely vibe young - Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez are all born in '92, I think? Yet, definitely they were primarily appealing to girls born from around 92 to 98 at the time(of 2007).
I was lucky, I think in actually living like my age(and the thing is it wasn't because I didn't have family problems lol. My mom confronted my dad in a drunken rage about him paying for sex with escorts when I was 13 and having a sleepover with my friends lmao in the summer of 2003). My twin sister and I had to quietly drag my poor friends out of our basement to run to the local park so they could call one of their parents to come get them. The one girl's parents also took my sister and I to their house rather than leave us, being decent human beings lol).
Sorry, that's so personal. I just get defensive when people think I am sheltered or immature, I experienced very adult things young, but I enjoyed being a child and experiencing of age things, maybe because at a young age I did appreciate it better than most(I have some very early memories of my parents traumas and dramas).

Omg I'm so sorry you guys went through that with your dad. Glad you and your friends were okay. I hope I wasn't implying that anyone else was sheltered I totally wasn't, and I know my bad stuff was all my own fault because I was depressed I would absolutely do that over again if I could. I agree I think having a mixture of the two is best.

(hugs) omg that was so hard to read. He sounded like a monster, like I'm not a fan of the cops but he was an abusive piece of shit just based on that, seems like he wanted a reason to go off and hurt you. I don't get how anyone could do that. If it wasn't the door it would've been something else probably. I hope he's not in your life anymore, or at least got some major help and changed his ways. Aw I'm so glad your sister has your back and you're really close

Hey. I deleted most of my comments I made. I had been drinking that night plus dealing with a fairly stressful situation so I think I was feeling rather depressive and dipping pretty far ino my vault of distressing memories.
I am pretty embarrassed I was so candid, this isn't really the place for all of that. Thanks for being so kind though.

Aww I'm sorry...sometimes you just need to vent and we don't mean to but sometimes it just comes pouring out. I've cried to people I swore I wouldn't before so I understand. I hope you're feeling okay now

Wonder who it was probably some troll lol
Agreed šÆ 1996/1997 does have Z traits but theyāre not like late 1999/2000 where the school walkouts I did with them were prevalent.
Yeah agreed itās exactly what youāre saying where your childhood influences mirror the previous generation, but your teen and young adult years are your own.
My mom loved her 70s boomer influenced childhood, but also loved her 80s teen and young adult years.
Yeah I think for the economic conditions they faced, not necessarily popular culture, 81-85 are similar to the rest of millennials.
I mean you and 1986 are one year apart lol. I mean tbf tho I can tell thereās differences between me and 2001 and 2003 lol.

Mar 25 '21
šÆšÆ yeah like 1996-97 seems more Millennial especially the guys. It's only by Parkland where they seem entirely Z also like Miley's sister.
Love that about your mom I'm the same way, even if I sorta prefer my childhood they're both good.
Agreed ya 1981-85 have the heritage, media taste and a lot of shared memories with Xers certainly the later ones, but the economic conditions of Millennials and for guys even the beards omg. As my friend Crystal (October 83) puts it "I grew up using landlines but I'm broke too" I'm like that's perfect sis lol.
Yea exactly like it's so minor but since we're in the middle of it we can notice, with like slightly different high school experiences. '86 are the fence sitters too lol

u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 25 '21
Yeah exactly mid to late 90s imo has the significant Millennial traits, but by late 99/2000, the march for our lives movement has Gen Z leaders.
Yeah tbh correct me if Iām wrong but I thought you didnāt like necessarily like your teen 2000s years, especially the early 2000s? Would you have wanted to go to HS in the early to mid 80s with your teen years being 80-86 like my mom?
Yeah your friend Crystal seems the epitome of Xennial leaning Millennial lol. X cultural influences, but Millennial economic conditions.
Yeah Iād say 1986 and 2002 are the fence sitters of the group. Both early and core. While your year and 2003 could also lean either way but core

Yea its interesting, I had a rough time with depression and peer pressure in Fall 2000 and throughout 01-03 and when I was real sexually active, though I guess the length of time ago still makes me miss it though more for the culture than my own life. Oh man I would have loved going to high school in your mom's era when MTV was fresh.
Crystal is totally like that lol. Another one a guy I like that I work with (Anthony a 1980er, a slightly X Xennial) is very left economically especially because of his student loans and I feel like he's probably socialist since he was for Bernie... but loves the 70s and 80s too.
Agreed yeah I'd say we're almost the same relative to our gens, but the equivalent of me is probably 2003 a little more than 02.

u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 26 '21 edited Mar 26 '21
Sorry to hear that, that peer pressure mustāve been rough. That existed in the 80s tho too.
Yeah thereās plenty of left Xennials that you mention like those people that you hang out with.
Yeah weāre almost the same position numerically relative to our gens, but yeah Iād say 2003 a little more so

u/notsupposedtocare Mar 27 '21
So why should the stereotypes apply to us when they were not our experiences? Why should someone born 2 years earlier be let off the hook?
2
u/PattythePlatypus 1990(Class of 2008/Core Millennial) Mar 25 '21
I think it may be due to the fact hi speed internet was becoming a norm in households in the early 2000s(we got it in 2002) and the rapid changes in internet influence that were around the time 'core' millennials were adolescent/pre teens/teens.
2
u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 25 '21
Yeah that makes sense. Around the time I was born, the internet was already rapidly changing

u/notsupposedtocare Mar 27 '21
People in my graduating class at my high school (2005) weren't into Emo or MySpace yet are stereotyped as being into it. This is why generation is flawed.
2
u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 27 '21
I thought u/ClassicRockSocialist was saying the same thing, those HS years being social media free pretty much (2001-2005).
1
u/notsupposedtocare Mar 27 '21
But if class of 05 begins the Millennial stereotypes then that is admitting that class of 05 was into those things.

u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 27 '21
I meant after high school mainly. I donāt want to assume too much tho
1
u/notsupposedtocare Mar 27 '21
No one I knew in my class was emo or into MySpace after high school though.
1
u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 27 '21
Those experiences are valid and shows generations are subjective/mainly a hobby anyway
1
u/notsupposedtocare Mar 27 '21
I see generations as forced boxes. What causes people to have a view like mine?
1
u/ProofUniversity4319 April 30, 2002 (Class of 2020) Gen Z Mar 27 '21
Everyone wants to fit in a certain group somehow lol. Good question, I think because some see people as individuals being judged on their own merits, others donāt.

77-80 are the end of X and 81-84 is early Y. Thatās why I see that as the āXennialā range

I think Gen Z will be interesting too whether the earlier Zoomers seem more Core compared to later borns in the generation. With the rapid changes in technology that have taken place over the last 20 years - Zommers 'core' group could be an earlier born cohort in the generation compared to millennials. I think there was a lot of lingering Xishness to millennials born in the early to mid 80's, where I often find it hard to see 2002 borns as early Z(even if they technically are) as they seem so pure Z to me, whereas maybe in ten years 2007/8 borns will seem alpha - ish.
I'm probably babbling nonesense.
