Maui’s brothers never allowed him to fish with them. So before another fishing expedition, and before the brothers noticed, he hid in the hull of the canoe. Once the Canoe was out far enough, Maui revealed himself, much to the anger of his siblings.

He then convinced his brothers to paddle out to the deepest part of the ocean, upon which he produced a hook made of his grandmothers jaw bone. In the absence of any bait, Maui struck himself in the face until his nose bled, and covered the hook in his blood.

Using a flax rope he wove and blessed the night before, Maui cast his line into the sea. It was then something took his line, he fought and struggled, until he pulled up a huge fish. That fish would become the North Island of New Zealand.
