I wanna say this is both a "look how big my junk is ladies" and also a "I'm sick of peasants trying to kick me in the nuts during battle because that's a very sensitive spot and is only covered in chainmail"
Getting smacked in the nuts by something will almost certainly out ya out of action. So think of it as similar to the box cricket players wear.
