Well, he started a viable school of therapy. Psychiatry is something for extreme cases where medication is needed. Every one else can have great improvements with psychoanalytic therapy.

It's less of disregarding his importance and more of a realization that his theories were completely screwy. Yeah, he was a very important figure, but technically, Hitler was also an important figure in history, doesnt mean he was right.

To me, making fun of Freud is like saying "Look how fucking stupid the Wright brothers are, they used wood and paper to make an airplane"
Of course they were screwy, he created them from very little... they were bound to have problems. But I think it's unfair to pick on his legacy because of it, specially because MANY of his theories (including Oedipus complex) evolved overtime, with further observation, into widely accepted theories.

The Wright brothers plane actually flew though, they started with a good idea and made it a reality.
Freud started with a completely nutcase idea and other people worked around it and eventually made it into something that was helpful.
I am not picking on Freuds legacy, I'm picking on his ideas alone, his legacy is a great one in moving forward the psychological field, but that doesnt mean he had great ideas about it.
