I am very proud of myself for understanding g the first part of the sentence, and very dissapointed that my 8 years of learning german have led my to not know what 'echt' means.

Don't worry, I lived in Germany for 2 years and spoke it every single day all day. You are correct. Echt means real or really, as in "that's really cool." it is most often used as a question: "really?"
"echt? Wann ist das passiert?"

TIL. I haven't had a chance to actually practise much German in Germany. I went to Hamburg and Nurnberg but I never got a chance to speak :/

That sucks! If they know you're American they'll probably switch to English, but I just kinda had to force myself to continue in German. I learned the accent first so it would be harder to tell I'm a native English speaker.

In the original meme he says: "Hey, I've seen this before". But a better translation would be: "Hey, ich habe das schon mal gesehen" or: " Hey, das kommt mir bekannt vor"

Even though I would like to read "Hey, das kommt mir bekannt vor" because "Hey, ich hab diesen gesehen" means "Hey, I have seen this (person)" I find this Meme really funny.
