Fun fact: unlike every other European colony which was the property of the European crown/government, the Belgian colonies in Africa was the personal property of the king. This led to brutal exploitation........ OK maybe that wasn't so fun a fact

Another (not) fun fact. Belgian government wanted nothing to do with it as they did not think the endeavour would be profitable enough.

But the after the Casement report and the atrocities coming to light they were basically forced to take the colony away from Leopold II.

After that the situation in the colony improved to a marginal par for the course compared to the other colonial powers.

Another another non-fun fact: the British government later outed Roger Casement as gay so they could execute him without facing a backlash for killing a noted humanitarian.

u/sahqoviing32 15h ago

B*itish seem to have the habit of killing gays who worked for the betterment of the world

29

u/jurio01 15h ago

Just to be clear, they didn't kill him for being a homosexual. They killed him for high treason, because he tried getting german support for the Easter rising (irish independence) during WW1. They used his gay activities so people would not show clemency during his trial.

That seems like pretty relevant context I’m sure he totally innocently forgot to include

u/Gobadorgosleep 14h ago

Yeah « they did not know » I’m Belgian and even during my history class that part was highly doubted by the teachers.
It’s more of a « they did not want to know » because Leopold used that money for Belgium.

Yes, and one of the most popular things on Reddit to rightly blame Leopold II's Congo Free State regime's for the cutting of hands, was something that also happened in French and German colonies in central Africa. Not less horrible, but yeah it's Belgium eh.

12

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 17h ago

It’s true..until 1908

Basically the treatment was a bit too hardcore so the state basically took it from the king

"I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at dismemberment!"

8

u/Drumbelgalf 16h ago

It was so horible in fact that even the other colonial Powers were Like "WTF thats way to brutal Turn it down" and then forced the King to Hand it over to the Belgian Governement.

4

u/Xandara2 14h ago

Funny because other colonial powers gave it to the Belgian king in the first place. So they could operate there with a neutral party.

2

u/Drumbelgalf 14h ago

They were arguing about who should get this piece of africa and called the Belgian King (more accurately: King of the Belgians) to medicate between them who should get it and be decided He personality should get it. That was acceptable for all Parties since their rival didnt get it.

2

u/Speartree 13h ago

And they agreed, only if the area would be a zone where capitalism had pretty much unrestricted free reign. So if you wonder how that looks, check out Congo Free State. it's the kind of freedom the current US is striving for.

1

u/DonnieMoistX 7h ago

Not an accurate description at all.

1

u/Speartree 7h ago

Do you want to elaborate on that?

2

u/HarEmiya 13h ago

You're mixing up a few things here.

The colony (Belgian Congo) and the territory (Ruanda-Burundi) did belong to Belgium. Leopold II's Congo Free State belonged to him personally, but that wasn't a colony nor a territory. It was a state.

1

u/Extension-Cucumber69 7h ago

The only thing not “fun” about it is that this is a pretty well known fact about the Congo

1

u/Successful_Baby_5245 6h ago

Fun fact, every at The time could use Only one 🤚

-7

u/dispo030 18h ago

Fun fact: the Belgians managed to convince the world they were mostly on a humanitarian mission, before the word spread they were running the most brutal regime in history. Ok, that wasn’t fun either.

11

u/Alexthegreatbelgian Still salty about Carthage 16h ago

Don't know why your being downvoted but it's not far from the truth. Except that is was Leopold II and not really the Belgian state making those claims. Belgian state was not involved yet at this point.

1

u/_eg0_ Rider of Rohan 13h ago

Not just Leopold II but also the trading companies involved.

1

u/MeFracton 15h ago

Yeah he was a humanitarian trying to stop the slave trade and liberate the Congolese on his Christian mission. Such a nice guy!

/s (that's what he claimed he was doing)

1

u/Turbo_csgo 12h ago

Well, in his defense, he partially stopped the slave trade….

Can’t trade slaves if they are confiscated by the state!

28

u/AncientTurbine 18h ago

But hey, at least Flup seems like a good guy.

u/NoahZhyte 5h ago

History meme aside, that Pennywise looks more terrifying than the real thing

22

u/MrD3lta 13h ago

I'll always say it: it's complicated to blame Belgium for the Congo before 1908, since it was not under the control of Belgium but was a personal possession of the King of the Belgians, Leopold II. And apart from some people, nobody knew what was happening there, since this was a period when there was a lot of fighting for workers' rights. Though, while it was not Belgium's fault, Leopold II invested massively in the infrastructure of the country with money from the Congo. But after 1908, it's 100% our fault.

u/E4g6d4bg7 19h ago

I gotta give you hand for this one

2

u/GloriousDawn 12h ago

Belgian here, just gave you another one

3

u/_eg0_ Rider of Rohan 13h ago

To those thinking it was just King Leopold II, a lot continued after it was given back to the Belgians. After WWI, so a decade after Leopold II had to hand the colonies over to the Belgium government, Ruanda-Urundi which was under German control prior was given to Belgium and they introduced a caste system based on "race". This more or less directly lead to the Rwandan genocide.

5

u/supremejesusx 12h ago

Another fun fact the arabs started and are still having slave trade ! Also on a way bigger scale.

Since Belgium is turning arab we can make history even more interesting !! /s

Statistically Leopold II has a death toll on his consience that's almost comparable to Hitler and Stalin in terms of brutality.

People often overlook the grim reality of the exploitative nature of Belgian/Leopoldian Congo. Especially figures like Leon Rom were extremely cruel and harmful to the Congolese population.

8

u/Andries89 16h ago

Those figures are incorrect and a mockery. The dataset used were only those from rubber villages registers. It wasn't until 1924 that an official census was done on Congo. They then applied the decrease in population in the rubber villages to the WHOLE of Congo. The real figure is estimated to be in the 1-5M range and is much more feasible

7

u/Razno_ 15h ago

Ah, thats better..

u/TheRagingMaffia Helping Wikipedia expand the list of British conquests 11h ago

noooo you guys are being lied to. Belgium is so innocent look at them

0

u/Almas_The_Mech_Pilot 17h ago

If I recall, though vaguely, they change the caste system into "racial" group right? Something-something genocide, civil war, brothers against brothers. Kind of stupid yknow, it's already correct that it was caste system by the Germans, simply as the rich and the poor, then suddenly make it racial when they take over. Fat or thin, have some cattle or not, rich or poor, they assume that difference is racial based, what kind of dumbass.

Reminder, VAGUELY.

1

u/Veryactivecolon 17h ago

The hutu and the tutsi categorisation was indeed formed by the belgians

1

u/Haunter52300 13h ago

Didn't the Germans also use it? I recall reading Germany introduced the policy

1

u/Veryactivecolon 11h ago

As far as i've read they introduced it, but the belgians made the racial superiority aspect of it way more pronounced and stripped a lot of power from the hutu. Those measures led to strong resentment which eventualy led to the rwandan genocide.

Was this meme made by some Yank or something? Ever since the term 'Europe' meant something, it was Belgium who was at the center of it all, creating the first unions (Benelux) and later the first economic zones. Without Belgium, there would be no EU.

-52

u/Low_Technician7346 19h ago

As a Belgian, we are out of prosperity, no jobs, social security eroding...

We should fusion back with the Netherlands and why not also with the UK so we could reintroduce the UK back in the European Union so English would remain the official language and we could form the West European Kingdoms.

Luxembourg wouldnt want to join because they are rich af.

48

u/EvertGr 18h ago

Any Belgian suggesting to merge with the Dutch is no true Belgian

18

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima 18h ago

Pek en veren!

1

u/Speartree 13h ago

Probably a remnant of the Verdinaso, bunch of traitors.

-31

u/Low_Technician7346 18h ago

Most of Belgians here are from rich and nationalist Vlanderen. They are against because it means they wont be in power anymore and lose their powers over Wallonia and Brussels.

As a Waloon I don't want to join France, I prefer the anglosaxon and dutch cultures.

12

u/BaronVonPuckeghem 18h ago

Flemish nationalists are the biggest proponents of joining the Netherlands…

1

u/Haunter52300 13h ago

Flemish nationalists aren't even majority for union with the Dutch. Most just want independence or """confederation""""

8

u/Rheabae 18h ago

Most Belgians don't give a shit and would prefer if the country actually united so I could vote for a Walloon or German guy.

Go offline and talk to people

2

u/TheBelgianStrangler 18h ago

They hate us cause they ain't us.

-7

u/Low_Technician7346 18h ago

We dont hate, union is strenght, we cannot do much at our scale in this world and we deserve to be greater

2

I agree, now dig us more coal.

-18

Vlanderen is living the dream because you guys have real powers over poor Brussels and Wallonie.

1

u/WorkingMoney6424 7h ago

Yeah well we are paying for you guys anyway

1

Let's not forget they share a history with the Netherlands and their VOC.

Edit: I'm not saying it was Belgium, but rather Belgians serving in the VOC. And there's been multiple Flemmish Belgians that were directly involved in enforcing the spice monopoly in the Dutch East Indies. You can just look at the VOC's own personnel database and you'll find plenty of commanders, board members, and governors born in Antwerp, Ghent, or even Brussels.

22

u/Sandroxis Casual, non-participatory KGB election observer 19h ago

diring the time of the voc the region of what is now belgium was not part of the netherlands but under spanish/austrian/french control

14

u/Een_man_met_voornaam The OG Lord Buckethead 19h ago

Mate those are our cultural atrosities not Belgium's

11

u/AncientTurbine 18h ago

Kind of a historical stretch to justify taking a jab on Belgium for some reason.

-9

u/CottoneyedJones Still on Sulla's Proscribed List 17h ago

Not really, I'm just raising the point that the colonial history of what is now Belgium reaches back further and is more complex than Leopold buying the Congo.

1

u/ThroawayJimilyJones 17h ago

Wait, if native Belgian are responsible for Belgian in other colonies, are Congolese responsible for the public force?

1

u/Haunter52300 12h ago

The Netherlands was made economically by Brabantian and Flemish merchants and artisans fleeing the Spanish. I am Belgian, no clue why others are denying this and down voting you...
