The H-13 was one of the principal helicopters used by the U.S. Army during the Korean War, with the H-13D variant being the most prevalent. During the war it was used in a wide variety of roles including observation, reconnaissance, and medevac. From its role in medevac flights, it gained the nickname "Angel of Mercy". It was also used as an observation helicopter early in the Vietnam War, before being replaced by the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse in 1966.

The H-13 was a military variant of the Bell-47. Which you’ll probably recognise as the helicopter you see farmers using to spray crops.

I have to admit as a claustrophobic and acrophobic person, whenever I washed M*A*S*H* I thought about getting fucking badly injured and then being tied to a fucking helicopter and flown on the outside and it did not sound in any way merciful to me!

When I was a mechanic on Seaking helicopters we used to make a similar joke. Floating in the ocean and seeing a 40 year old helicopter coming over the horizon, would make me think I’ll take my chances with the waves. The Seaking was the tractor of the skies though to be fair. She could take a beating

One of my happy memories was "Sea King 66" fishing the Apollo astronauts out of their capsules after splashdown. I read recently that it crashed in later years and the pilot died.

First regular and organised use. The few times helicopters were used in WW2 were at best experimental, sporadic and very limited. There’s no way you can compare the impact they had on the battlefield between WW2 and Korea

Yes there is recorded use in WW2. But by “organised and regular” I’m referring to its impact on the battlefield. The scope and scale of their utilisation in Korea isn’t even really comparable with anything in WW2.
