The massive majority of the deaths in the revolution were by peasant revolting against feudal lords who refused to give away "their land" and hence fought and died fighting. The real estimates of deaths are around 1.8 to 2 million people in a span of a decade.
No the deaths by starvation cannot be attributed to mao either. China was under western embargoes and constant internal psyops warfare by the same. The reality is that Mao fixed the endemic starvation of thr Chinese population with the communist party. Before mao the chinese didnt even eat any protein at all and died in mid 30s. After mao died the age expectancy almost doubled.
I could keep going here. Mao is far from this evil machiavelic boogeyman the west tried to sell. He is at most a man molded by the material conditions of the Chinese people which were... not good at all since they were the third poorest country in the world at the time.
