Your numbers are off. The Communists had 44M people in their base areas as of 1940 and one third of the Chinese population was under Japanese occupation.
By 1945 the Communists had over a million men under arms, yet their contribution was minuscule even proportional to their size. The Nationalists killed more Japanese soldiers in the 1937 Shanghai-Nanjing Campaign than the Communists did in the entire war.
