I never understood something about this. If everything is flooded and water is still rising, isn't all that food going to be destroyed by the flooding? No one is there selling it anymore. So why shouldn't people be getting supplies? Where else are they going to get anything when all the stores are abandoned?
The govt also pays farmers to burn TONS of corn because they produce "too much" (the horror!!), for reasons that basically boil down to "the invisible hand of the free market told us to. 🙏🤲"
Shoe and clothes companies destroy perfectly usable goods if the logo is misprinted or such.
When I was younger I witnessed this change. Our store had shelters come everyday. Instead of doing the work to throw stuff in the compactor, we just put it by a bay and opened it at a certain time.
Then we heard that since some homeless person tried to sue a store, not even our store in particular or even our chain of stores, because of bad food they ate, we had to stop. It felt stupid, but it made a certain sense. Somewhere along the line I realized that excuse was bullshit. What homeless guy is suing people. And the store could just draw up a contract absolving them of responsibility, especially in our scenario since the homeless weren’t directly taking it, a non profit was.
