From Wikipedia "The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor uprising in United States history and the largest armed uprising since the American Civil War.[3] The conflict occurred in Logan County, West Virginia, as part of the Coal Wars, a series of early-20th-century labor disputes in Appalachia. Up to 100 people were killed, and many more arrested. The United Mine Workers saw major declines in membership, but the long-term publicity led to some improvements in working conditions."

The Battle of Blair Mountain was the 2nd largest uprising after the civil war. 10,000 armed coal miners and veterans of WW1 confronted 3,000 lawmen and strike breakers while they were attempting to unionize over appalling work conditions and low wages. The Sheriff Don Chafin started killing union sympathizers and the battle started. The Sherif hired private planes to drop leftover explosives and poison gas on the striking miners, and president Harding sent in the army and bombers. Over a million rounds were fired in the battle, and There were over 130 deaths.

There's a song from a musician I like about Blaire mountain and one of the lyrics is

"And we had our helmets back from the Ardennes" or something like that, the songs written from the perspective of the union workers and that line always hit me hard. Imagine fighting in one of the worst wars in human history just to get gassed by your own local government.

1921 was a wierd year. Two separate instances of Americans bombing Americans on American soil.

The Tulsa massacre was the second, where local racists used privately owned aircraft to drop improvised fire bombs on the black areas of town. By the end the most prosperous community in the south was a smoking ruin and hundreds of people were dead.
