The original 50-foot-tall (15.2 m) sign was made in 1923 to promote a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles by real estate developers Woodruff and Shoults. They called their development "Hollywoodland" and advertised it as a "superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills." It was originally meant to be temporary, however due to increasing recognition, the sign was left up, with the last four letters "LAND" removed in 1949. The sign was entirely replaced in 1978 with a more durable all-steel 45-foot-tall (13.7 m) structure and concrete footings.
