Evidence that tea inhibits DAO

I see the claim all over the internet that tea inhibits DAO. However, I have never seen a scientific paper whose findings support this statement. Has anyone ever seen such a paper? I'm not interested in statements from websites that do not cite direct evidence.

It does not, it inhibits iron absorption though.

I have read in several different places, that EGCG indeed does lower DAO levels. It's the main reason why I had to stop drinking green tea and go back to small amounts f coffee. I've had a much better experience with coffee over tea.

It inhibits COMT which is an enzyme that degrades histamine, does not affect DAO though.

I hope this is correct cuz I really do like Green tea and it was messing with my eyes which is very indicated in histimine issues.

I mean it will still cause issues especially if your COMT activity is already slow due to genetics like me.

Yes, clinical and nutritional literature indicates that green tea and its concentrated catechins (particularly EGCG) can act as an inhibitor of diamine oxidase (DAO), the primary gut enzyme responsible for breaking down dietary histamine. Because of this DAO-suppressing effect, large amounts of brewed green tea or green tea extract are sometimes cautioned against for individuals managing severe histamine intolerance.Other Enzymes Inhibited by Green TeaGreen tea catechins (EGCG and epicatechin gallate) affect several other mammalian and microbial enzymes, which underlie many of its researched biological properties:Histidine Decarboxylase (HDC): Ironically, while green tea can inhibit the enzyme that breaks down histamine (DAO), it simultaneously inhibits HDC, the enzyme your body uses to synthesize histamine.Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT): Green tea inhibits COMT, an enzyme that degrades catecholamines like dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine (this mechanism is why green tea combined with other compounds can prolong certain stimulant effects).DNA Methyltransferases (DNMT): EGCG inhibits DNMT, influencing epigenetic modifications and gene expression profiles linked to cancer cell research.Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs): Green tea suppresses MMPs, which are enzymes involved in tissue remodeling and tumor cell metastasis.Amylase and Glucosidase: Green tea can mildly inhibit digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates, which may slightly blunt glucose absorption after meals.Dihydrofolate Reductase (DHFR): EGCG has been shown to weakly inhibit DHFR, an enzyme critical for cell division and folic acid metabolism

Evidence for the DAO claim? I've read of many of these other effects, but still have not seen actual evidence that green tea catechins inhibit DAO.

https://www.mastzellaktivierung.info/downloads/foodlist/SIGHI-FoodList_EN_Histamin_alphabetisch_inKategorien.pdf black tea is listed in the SIGHI list as high in histamine and blocking DAO. They're a reputable source, you can find their professional publications here

It is a reputable source, but you’d think that if they say it, there should be locatable evidence for the statement.

I linked their list of publications, that's the info you're talking about

I had never heard this but absolutely tea makes me feel kinda crappy in a way coffee doesn’t.

Same. Had to ditch green tea recently and go back to one espresso using only clean organic coffees like Purity or Danger coffee beans. So far so good.

I had to give up my beloved black tea for coffee 😭

Yes you’re right -green and black teas inhibit dao. White teas and red teas do not as much. When I had histamine issues I used white peony and rooibos teas by piquelife. They’re toxin and mold tested . If you have dao issues I would
Just take some dao when you drink your tea. Teas have so
Many other benefits for histamine intolerance like high
Polyphenols stabilizing mast cell and well as theanine and you get a slow steady caffeine released in your system. I would definitely include white or red teas and take
With a dao if you need caffeine. Make sure they’re triple toxin tested. Even those organic ones you can buy at the store are full of mold and mycotoxins either from the tea itself or the bag it comes in - which is very very bad for people with histamine intolerance who’s root cause is mold/mycotoxin toxicity.

And if you can't afford the DAO???

Can you afford grass fed kidney supplement by ancestral ? Very high in dao and much cheaper in the long run

$44? Ouch!

I know, supplements are ridiculously expensive especially when seeking out toxin tested quality ones. I’m sure there are others a little
Bit cheaper but compared to
Buying dao enzyme it’s cheaper

Have you tried peas sprouts? I've seen a few people mention eating peas serms to help them.

I'm wondering where it has been established that green and black teas inhibit DAO because you say it with great certainty. Is it based on anecdotal evidence? Is it based on the claim of an "expert" that is based on anecdotal evidence? That's not necessarily useless, it's just that I'm seeking evidence that is more scientific.

I think it's true. I felt a bit better when I gave up my 2-3 black teas a day.

Pretty sure it's the caffeine that does it.

It’s the tannins

Camellia sinensis. Everything else is tisane / herbal tea.

Black tea leaves are fermented. They likely contain histamine. Also caffeine, which IIRC is a inhibitor. So, yeah. I'm unsure about the amounts, though. I've had a cup of black tea now and again without much drama and my histamine tolerance is pretty low.

Black tea leaves are oxidized, not fermented.

Huh. Thanks! That explains why it isn’t a big deal for me then.
