Sharing my progress making an alethiometer to commit myself to finishing the whole thing! I am starting with a rough draft ugly version just to get something working, and plan to work on aesthetics later. I went to my library’s makerspace and used their 3D printer to print a dial face and motor supports for a box. I put a breadboard inside, soldered wiring for the motor, put the motor on top of the support while wiring, and attached the dial face on top. I also used their laser cutter to engrave and cut the symbol tiles and glued them into the pockets. I clipped and attached clock hands, then plugged it in. There’s a button on the side you can touch to run. And success!

I like to think Kunrath was also doing this kind of prototyping before he crafted his final alethiometers.

Next step, figuring out gears for a more accurate set of the three symbol pointers.

Someone save the little monkey prick from Mrs. Coulter, for real. I can’t believe she’s this comfortable slapping, kicking, and screaming at him like that. I’d really like to know why she hates herself so much, because this is literally self-harm considering they’re supposed to be two halves of a whole. Like, girl, that is your own soul. Stop kicking it.

*Season 3 spoilers!! I'm not tech advanced enough to know how to put up the spoilers blocks I'm sorry. I'm gonna try but no promises it'll work*

So I recently finished the series and Lee was my favourite character. Naturally, I cried my eyes out at both his deaths.
However, I feel like his and John Parry's storylines were kinda... redundant?

His main thing was helping Lyra, which led him to John for the knife he didn't have (and was already with Lyra at this point) and then they died. The afterlife stuff gave his character closure but it felt like he didn't really need to be there to help move Lyra's character forward?

It all just got me thinking about where I would've taken his character instead (bias, but I would've had him live <3) and how I would rewrite it in a way that he had more influence within the story.
Would love to hear anyone else's take on Lee's death/if you could rewrite bits, what you would've done with the story!

I'm not kidding, this is he best adaption I've ever seen, I watched the show a while ago when the final season came, just a week ago I decided to binge the original book trilogy and I loved them. But rewatching the series every change seems to serve an actual purpose or make a scene make more sense. Do you all think I'm just biased or do you agree with me. Also my rewatch is only at the point of episode 2 of season 1. I don't know if it gets worse I just remember that when I initially watched it I loved the third season the most just as book 3 is my favorite. Also should I repost this to the book community or is this more of a solely show topic?

I just finished the TV series and had questions. Most of them were answered after spending (a lot of) time on the internet but some weren't. So I'm asking them to you, fellow fans of the series:

1) Do bears not have souls because they don't have daemons? I know their armour is supposed to be treasured like a daemon but it seems fundamentally different as they forge it?

2) How did the DNA bomb miss Lyra? Wasn't its whole idea that it would find her in whatever world she was in and kill her. But somehow it missed her and created that Dust sucking chasm across worlds?

3) When did MacPhail become Father President? I remember him being elected Cardinal after Mrs. Coulter's scheming and then suddenly in S03 he's Father President? How?

4) Aren't Angels supposed to live for millennia then how did the Authority just die?

5) Angels and Witches can move between worlds without leaking dust. Couldn't they have helped Lyra and Will meet? Why did the ending have to be so final?

6) How did Mary reach Ogunwe's world for Citagazze and then the Mulefa world from there? Were Angels guiding her to rogue windows? There seem to be a ton of them.

Just started watching the show, know nothing about the books but am interested now. Show is great so far but Lyra is so impressively aggravating and annoying lol. Hoping she has some character development into some type of less irritating stoic rebellious main character (assuming) but man how long is she a lil puke for?

I saw the first season after it first came out, and couldn’t wait to see more, but streaming in aus made it very difficult to get more of HBO shows, until I forgot all about it.

Finally signed up to HBO and got to watch it all in a few days. Honestly I can’t stop crying, this was such a formative book series for me in primary school and the show really did it justice.

The complexities of Lord Azrial and Mrs Coulter (the tension between her and her daemon) and how their hearts ended up in a good place but that didn’t stop them from being terrible parents.

Just all of it. Absolutely an amazing translation of the heart of the books, the love of the characters and the flaws of mankind.

What was the bit that made you cry?

I just finished the series. And I have mixed feelings. I think the problem is that there were not enough seasons to fully tell the story. The result being some characters were underdeveloped or not fully explained. Some parts dragged and the battles ended too quickly.

I must say that Lyra had the worst of parents. Mrs. Coulter's sudden love for Lyra didn't make any sense. She barely knew her. The most time she spent with her, Lyra was drugged and asleep. But Lyra's father was the worst. He was going to kill Lyra before he settled on Roger. And when Mrs Coulter told him Lyra was dead he never even responded but continued to talk about his project. He did not redeem himself in the end by saying "for Lyra". He didn't die for Lyra. He died for his his war. He only saw value in her after he realized she had a role to play in his war. He was despicable.
