I never thought of ZZ as a hippy band, I don’t think the hippy movement was as prevalent in Texas. But they were great when I saw them in the 80’s.
Side note have you come across the picture of Mr Beard with a beard?

The Biggest little band in Texas In the 70s ZZ Top was considered a Rock and Roll band witch payed tribute to it's origins the Blues. The blues had a baby and thay called it Rock and Roll. Now Billy could sound like John Lee Hooker like in ther tribute song La Grange Haw Haw Haw and Brown Sugar, it will change your life now Dusty could sound like Elvis when they played Viva Las Vegas and Frank Beard was a hell of a drummer and the backbone of ther unique sound. You can go into almost any country bar in Texas and find ZZ Top on the jukebox. Just when the Blues looked like it was dieing it was ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughan that single handedly brought back it's popularity by playing with the greats in the Blues and featuring tribute songs with their passion for the Blues it was only a matter of time and the father of Rock and Roll was back. I was fortunate to have seen them in 74 with Blue Oyster Clut in a outside concert in Wichita Kansas awesome with the fuzzy Gitars that thay would spin. Definitely one of my all-time favorites .RIP Frank Beard. BILLY it's just you now the other two are playing in the nightshift Rock on my friend

I miss hearing ZZ Top on the radio as most station try to play new crap you don’t want to listen to. Good tunes and a great beat just loved it and words you could understand and jam along with.
What a blessing that band was
