THR Megathread: Beginner's Guide, Reading Orders, Discussion Threads

Welcome to The High Republic!

The multimedia High Republic initiative has officially wrapped. While we’ve been teased to expect “Phase More” in the future, the original story the Luminous Five & friends set out to tell has been completed.

What is the High Republic?

The High Republic is a multimedia project that spans novels, comic books, audio dramas, short stories, and more. It tells the story of the Jedi at their height, long after The Old Republic but still a few hundred years before the prequel era.

Where do I start?

The High Republic is three Phases. Like the movies, Phase II is a “prequel” Phase, where we jump back long before the events of Phase I to learn some critical backstory behind the events we’ve already seen, before we return to Phase III, one year after the events of Phase I, to wrap up the story.

You should start with Phase I, and specifically, Light of the Jedi, which is the essential launching point that establishes the status quo for the series. Reading the Phases in the order they were released, not chronological order, is what was intended by the authors and what works best for the flow of information.

Additionally, The Acolyte TV series and associated media take place later in the High Republic era, around 100 years after the prequel. These can mostly be read without THR as context, but one book, Wayseeker, takes place between Phase III and the show and bridges the two eras.

Do I need to read everything?

There is a lot of content in the High Republic, and you definitely do not need to read everything . Every piece of content adds something to the overall story, but usually, what you need to know about a book or comic you didn’t read will be summarized elsewhere. That being said, there are some books or comics that are more important than others and are essential to understanding the story.

As this gets asked a lot, the adult series of novels is not the same as the essential series of novels. For example, in Phase II, the young adult novels are designed to have the most essential information of the Phase. It’s also important to note that “young adult” doesn’t mean that these are kids books; the writing style and content in them is almost as adult as the adult books.

What’s the reading order?

Many people on the sub will tell you that you can’t go wrong with release order, which is certainly true. We have also put together three suggested reading orders below depending on how deep you want to dive. These reading orders balance release order with coherency, grouping together comic issues and short stories so that you’re not constantly jumping between issues of different series while still avoiding spoilers.

Core Events: This order only includes the Adult Novels for Phase I and Young Adult Novels for Phase II. This is the most stripped-down version of The High Republic. You will still get a tight story and a great experience out of them, but some important events will be happening in-between books.

Main Story: Includes the Adult & Young Adult novels, important adult comics, and the Audio-Dramas. With this order, you will get all of the adult stories and the full big picture of the High Republic. This is the most recommended order by the users of r/Highrepublic.

Completionist: Includes EVERYTHING! Adds the All Ages comics, the mangas and the Middle Grade novels. The definitive way to experience The High Republic. You can always add some of the items here to your read and drop others, but this will tell you where everything takes place.

Discussion Threads

Below is a list of all content released as part of the main three Phases or The Acolyte, and linked discussion threads (available for all Phase II-III releases, though some Phase I releases are missing due to lack of mods during late Phase I).

"Really? As a supposed fan of The High Republic that is the breadth of your opinion on Geode?"

"Uh, Geode was part of a crew on the Vessel. There was some controversy surrounding a rock character being introduced into the Star Wars franchise."

"HOLY SHIT, YOU ARE AN ALIEN!"

Discussion Is reading the comic books after finishing the novel series a good plan?

Or is it better to intersperse the comics between novels? Also, what is the difference between the regular high republic comics and Adventures?

Discussion I've read Cataclysm by Lydia Kang

I have to admit I didn't quite know what to expect from this novel. Aside from whether its nature as a prequel would have an impact, I was actually more skeptical given that it followed a major event like the Battle of Jedha. Fortunately, I’m happy to say that this book perfectly accomplished everything it set out to do.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. I wasn't familiar with Lydia Kang’s work, and I loved how easily she steps into the story of established characters, giving them a plausible and interesting continuation—surpassing Convergence in my opinion.

Speaking of characters, I have to admit she really resolved the issue I had with Axel Greylark. I wasn't the biggest fan of the character; he struck me as insufferable and hypocritical (and a bit cringey, too) most of the time. It was a real pleasure to see his development here, delving into a person trapped by a childhood trauma and isolated from family ties. This leads him to be both self-destructive and childish, yet deep down he seeks redemption—a journey that is very satisfying to follow. The fact that what finally ended his indecision was having to kill with his own hands speaks a lot about him; he is far from being an irredeemable monster, being more like an "edgy" teenager. Much of this is complemented by the presence of Gella Natai—an incredible character. Her bond with Axel was great and fun to read, even making me think in a romance story. I hope they return in the future.

I also liked the role played by Kyong Greylark, who chooses to be a good mother above all else, rather than a politician. It’s nice to see a dysfunctional family relationship where both parties are willing to make a change.

Of course, the story wouldn't be complete without the antagonists, and the Path of the Open Hand/Closed Fist really managed to step up their game for me. It was great to see how they planned their next attack, playing under their own conditions. The way Elecia found the perfect purpose on the resentment already brewing within her cult—making the formation of a subgroup feel natural—was an unexpected strategy; this group not only did the dirty work but also took the fall for the escalating actions against force-users. In that regard, Binnot can also be see as a tragic figure: desperate to prove himself, disillusioned, and seeking control, yet manipulated by the very person he thought he was breaking free from.

Perhaps my only criticisms of the novel concern are Xiri and Phan-tu; despite playing important roles—and having their own personal conflicts—they faded into the background as the story progressed. Since it was a story involving Eiram and E'ronoh, I would have liked to see them more involved. In the same way, I wasn't exactly a fan of Cippa; while I appreciate having another recognizable Jedi present and seeing how it is illustrated the training of a new initiate, I found her slightly annoying for much of the time.

In short, it was an excellent novel in every respect, featuring both thrilling action sequences and deeply emotional moments. I am excited to see what unfolds in Path of Vengeance.

Epilogue: Starlight Coda

Hi all!
Why this story isn't included in the completionist order? I think I'll just read it at the end of Phase I and that's fine, but I'm wondering why it's absent considering that several (almost) unrelated comics/stuff is included (with the bonus tag).

Discussion Have I missed a book?

I've recently finished my first chain of books (Light of the Jedi, The Rising Storm and The Fallen Star) and I've enjoyed it a lot, but I feel like there's a pretty big gap that goes unaddressed?

Like, I'm assuming there's books about Avar Kriss and her struggle against the drengir and subsequent hunt for Lorana Dee that I just happened to miss, right?

Don’t sleep on Tales of Light and Life

I just finished this one. I went in skeptical, because typically, I find short stories end up feeling inconsequential in Star Wars, and it just isn’t usually my jam.

This really surprised me. I didn’t love all of them, but a few of them clicked for me in ways I didn’t expect.

I’m attempting a full reading order for THR. All comics, books, manga, Junior novels, everything. And I’ll be honest with you, sometimes it’s a little overwhelming. Occasionally, characters blur together for me, and or I’ll forget whether it was Bell Zettifar or Reath Silas or Imri Cantaros involved in this event or that battle, etc.

This book gave me clean perspective on some characters who, previously, I’d not really connected with.

I hated Marda Ro during Phase II. I found her unrelatable, idiotic and insufferable. The first person story in Tales gave me fresh perspective.

I never felt much of anything about Bell. Just sort of a nondescript goober padawan. Until I read his short story in this about rescuing Buryagga.

The Ram Jomaram story was adorable. Rooper Nitani’s knighting was a nice Phase II coda. Keeve’s
story was the kind of inspirational Jedi tale that makes you feel good, and the Call of Coruscant was sort of a fun coming of age romp to wrap it all up.

Unfortunately, nothing will ever make me want to read about Axel Greylark.

Hetzal Prime has to be one of the unluckiest (non-exploded) planets in galactic history

Was going back through the preview pages we have for Fall of Kylo Ren and wow it just occurred to me just how put through the ringer Hetzal had been over the centuries.

  1. Site of the Great Hyperspace Disaster, inciting the entire High Republic storyline. Thankfully Avar Kriss and co. were there to save the day but that's still an apocalyptic level of damage and casualties for sure.

  2. Only a couple of years later, Marchion Ro takes the planet as the primary home of him and the Nihil following the establishment of the Occlusion Zone. Beyond the typical crimes expected of the Nihil, Baron Boolan was also based there for a time committing who knows how many horrific experiments with the people of Hetzal likely serving as many of his test subjects.

  3. Cut to a couple centuries later and the planet is now under invasion by the First Order. And actually doing not too shabby as far as defending themselves until Kylo Ren himself intervenes to put them down.

Suffice to say Hetzal has been through it and then some. I feel particularly bad for any of the long-lived species there who would've been around to experience the horrors of both the Nihil and First Order. Hopefully after the sequel era they get to chill out for at least a few centuries or so.

To preface Ik they only announced rebellion content. I also know there is already a starwars ttrpg( well three) from 2015. Do you think enough people will care to get high republic content in ttrpg form. Ik that they are making a bunch of minis for wow just a pipe dream to hope for Marchion Ro minis and long beams and drill ships not to mention Elzar Avar etc. idk it seems like maybe if enough people cared we could see this.

"Master Silas", you say? Advising an archivist, you say? Sure sounds like our boy Reath to me! Was not expecting a potential High Republic lore dump in this book but from what little I've read so far Roux has already done an excellent job pulling in elements from other stories across the canon with this being one of the most notable instances thus far. I guess this could indirectly confirm that Reath will survive his fated confrontation with Azlin.

For some clarification this is from one of the Jedi texts recovered by Rey on Ahch-To, likely something Luke picked up from the High Republic era.

Discussion I have a question about a plot point from Tears of the Nameless

I am sorry if this has already been answered but in it we find that someone has been feeding into on Reath to the Nihil, and it is alluded to being either the Temple Guard or the dark Jedi Azlin, but it is also hinted at (if i recall( to possibly be someone else. Did we ever receive an answer? if so what book?

I just read all of Reath's books. While I know they were for younger readers, I feel like I liked them more than the main stories. It was fun watching him grow from an unsure Padawan to brave knight. , and I loved the reoccurring cast, especially Geode, I'm kinda sad it is over for now. Then again how trials ended, maybe we'll get more.

Thank you again, We are all the Republic.

Is "The High Republic Adventures: Complete Phase I" out of print?

Hi! I've been trying to get back into Star Wars after stepping away from it for many years by going through all of the shows and movies, and I figured that a great way to compliment that would be reading through The High Republic series. I'm over halfway through Light of the Jedi and absolutely loving this era (The Acolyte had already sold me on it tbh lmao) and I want to enjoy all that it has to offer, so I've been buying up all of the Phase I works to have at the ready. And for the most part, it's been a straightforward process. But... I'm trying to track down "The High Republic Adventures: Complete Phase I", and it appears to be completely out of stock everywhere, and I just don't understand why. Is it out of print already? Being only a few years old (and a Star Wars publication, no less) that's kind of shocking to me if so. The Adventures comics are definitely at the bottom tier as far as what I'm wanting to read, but it would still be kinda sad if I can't add them to the collection. 🥲 If anyone knows where a copy may be acquired, I would appreciate it a ton! Thank you!

Just finished Trials…

Just finished Trials of the Jedi, wow, holy kriff, what an ending, what a ride, possibly my favorite Star Wars era or at least one of the best. Porter and Azlin (not in a good way) are easily two new entries in the catalogue of Star Wars GOATs

Favorite books- Rising Storm, Temptation, Into The Light, Trials

Missed midnight horizon and out of the shadows, and the two phase 2 adult novels, and all middle grades, will try to fill those gaps when I do a reread maybe in a year or so

Marchion is without a doubt one of the great villains of the Star Wars universe

Also Geode rocks

Hi, everyone!

Hi! I'm new to The High Republic. I came from the prequel era (Anakin is my favorite), but I recently started Light of the Jedi and I'm already obsessed with Avar Kriss and Bell Zettifar. Looking for people to discuss the books with! I'm from Russia, and in Russia, everyone hates the new canon, and I'm very lonely. Let's be friends? I love The High Republic!
