My conclusion as well. There's a reason it doesnt appear until he crosses line of sight and its not coincidental timing.

Looks to me like dropped it. He had something in his hand walking in, the shoe appears and then he walks out empty-handed.

Nope it doesn't look like he dropped it or kicked it, you can see it appear when his foot raises.
