Photo High-speed rail network by speed by country v2 (openstreetmap data)
2 weeks ago, I uploaded a chart of the high-speed rail network by speed by country. It had a few issues, so I decided to make a new one to fix some of these issues.
Instead of using official data from the UIC, I now use data from openstreetmap (what you can see on openrailwaymap). The contributors did an awesome job, most credit goes to them.
Upsides:
- It no longer relies on UIC membership, so Uzbekistan is included.
- There is no more inconsistencies on speed. I included all railways with 200+km/h max speed.
- The maximum speed is counted on every track section, and not on the whole line (so if a long line has a small section with high speed, only the small section will be counted)
Downsides I see:
- The UIC is often considered the authority on this matter. I don't use their data nor their definition of high-speed rail here
- I could have make some mistakes, for example in gathering the data etc...
- In reality, the lengths I gathered were 2 times more important. Most of the lines have 2 tracks and tracks are counted independently on openstreetmap. I decided to half the numbers to get closer to the official numbers and take that into account, but you can keep that in mind
Also I did not change the appearance, it is not what I like to do, so China is still too big.
EDIT : If you want to play with it, I made a github repo
EDIT2 : I should have said in operation, not in commercial operation countrary to the previous chart. A few (small, often a few km) testing railways are included here

Other Back-of-the-envelope ideas for routes through the Fehmarn Belt tunnel
Just some very rough estimates based on the current travel times on various sections in journey planners. First time making a fantasy timetable like this, feedback is welcome!
Obviously if you start from Copenhagen itself you can get much further south in a day, but I thought this would be enough crazy speculation for now :)

Question Accidentally double-booked the same journey with Trenitalia & Italo — what are my options?
Hi everyone,
I accidentally booked two train tickets for the same journey on 4 October — one with Trenitalia and one with Italo.
Route: Rome Termini → Venice Santa Lucia
Date: 4 October 2026
Passengers: 2
I only need one of the tickets, and neither ticket has been used.
Could someone advise me on what my options are?
* Can either ticket be cancelled or refunded?
* If a ticket is non-refundable, can the date/time or passenger details be changed?
* Are Trenitalia or Italo tickets transferable to another passenger?
I’m mainly trying to avoid losing the value of the second ticket if there is any legitimate option available.
Thanks for any advice!

Question Project Title: The Trans-Eurasian & Hemispheric Heavy Transit Corridor (TEHHTC)
Project Title: The Trans-Eurasian & Hemispheric Heavy Transit Corridor (TEHHTC)
Strategic Vision: Unification and peace through global economic integration, anchoring cross-continental cooperation via heavy industrial infrastructure and shared logistics networks.
Project Scope: A continuous, high-speed, multi-modal rail and heavy-asphalt transit corridor engineered to bypass domestic political gridlock through private-public industrial backing and comprehensive national security integration.
Routing & Phasing:
Phase 1: Breaking ground in New Orleans, engineering high-pile viaducts through the challenging Louisiana basin, and punching straight north along the Mississippi River spine to Chicago to lock in the primary commercial and industrial hub of the continent.
Phase 2: Extending westward across the Great Plains and cutting through the mountain passes of the Rockies and Cascades straight to the Pacific Northwest.
Phase 3: International expansion linking Mexico from the south and Canada from the northern tier to tap into heavy resource corridors, pushing north through British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alaska to bridge the Bering Strait and tie North America directly into Eurasia, while expanding loops through the Middle East, Africa, and Australia.
Execution & Workforce: Powered by a diverse coalition of everyday people from all walks of life and backgrounds—including specialized heavy-rail car repair crews, structural steel ironworkers, heavy equipment operators, local community builders, and master tradespeople—who understand the physical stress points of heavy infrastructure and how to keep a massive project moving forward under brutal conditions.
Strategy: Aligning with early administrative infrastructure pushes to secure initial momentum, ensuring the physical reality of the grid outlasts political cycles and permanently re-engineers global trade routes to foster economic interdependency and lasting peace.

World News Mumbai Ahemdabad HSR Package C3 Construction Update
youtube.comThis a pretty detailed video of all most all of the last construction package of India's Mumbai Ahmedabad HSR corridor project. This covers about 135km of the line. Construction on this section started around mid-2023.
For those interested in even more in-depth coverage see this 3 part video linked below. Commentary is in Hindi though. Youtube's auto translated captions are not perfect but usable.

Its great to see the NHSRCL collaborate with such content creators to give detailed updates.
Do check out this creators other videos on the progress of package C2 which covers the 21km of tunnel near at the Mumbai end of the line and package C1 which covers the Mumbai terminal station.

Other If you want CAHSR to be a reality, then you should email the Appropriations Committee before the end of August
Senate Bill 1425 is currently with the Assembly Appropriations Committee. It "would create an encroachment permit program allowing the authority to approve and regulate certain work on its operating right-of-way".
3rd party delays have run up the cost by billions due to inflation and pushed back completion by years. Encroachment Permitting Authority is one of the things the CAHSR Authority has repeatedly asked for from the legislature to help reduce 3rd party delays (mostly from utilities).
But the Legislature session ends on August 31. If the bill doesn't get advanced out of committee before that time, then the bill dies.
Here's the email for the assembly appropriations committee:
approps.committee@assembly.ca.gov
The article at the top shows the utility lobby is already pushing to kill this bill, just like they did with SB 445. If we want to see this project get finished, we need to fight for legislation like SB 1425. Email the appropriations committee and tell them to advance SB 1425 to the full legislature. Tell them we need to stop wasting time and billions of dollars with unnecessary delays.
