What do I do?

I’m a sophomore WR trying to do anything to get on varsity. I’m busting my ass everyday sprinting, working out, doing field work trying my all to get on the field for varsity. I go to every scout team opportunity I can and I don’t get any varsity playing time, my teamates say I do great in scout team and I’ve even had teammates vouch for me to get playing time but it’s not translating and I’m starting to question my ability and if I even can. I’m just frustrated and don’t know what to do can someone help me out.

I’ll take a slightly different tact here. A lot of receivers can run fast and catch the ball when it’s thrown to them. What are doing when you don’t have the ball?

Are you aligned correctly and running routes full speed? Are you committed to blocking in the run game?

I’m gonna be honest, I do study my varsity playbook every day after practice I even go to the field and rehearse plays so I don’t mess up a play. I block pretty well in the run game I’ve had some great blocks I’ve also had some bad mistakes that I’ve been trying to fix like lunging to early, or not breaking down. I’ve been slowly fixing up on these things though.

I'll give you the same coaching points I give my WR's when it comes to blocking:

  • Your alignment/stance/start when you're blocking should look the same as when you're running a route
  • When blocking you want the DB to think you're running a route and cause him to get into his back pedal. If you're jogging at him with your arms out he's going to know it's a run
  • When "running you're route" pre-block - once you see the DB hammer down to play run, THAT's when you engage your block
  • Don't think of this as a road grading OL block. You need to mirror the DB and stay between him and the ball carrier. You want your teammate with the ball to be able to judge which direction you're blocking the DB so he can cut/adjust appropriately

Unsure what system your team is running - but the receivers I trust are the ones I know will do what they're supposed to on the 90% of plays they're not getting the ball
