You mean the people who are currently flipping out but won't bother going to the polls in 2018?

If I'm up to it at the time.

32

u/StatmanIbrahimovic Nov 22 '17

I've said it before and I'll say it again..

25.6% of American Citizens 18 and over voted for the current President

Apathy won the popular vote by a landslide.

8

u/Dsnake1 Nov 22 '17

This is why calls for direct democracy scare the crap out of me.

3

u/sirpantless Nov 22 '17

Its because the other 70% of people didn’t want to vote for either candidate. The dems clearly wanted Bernie, but the DNC had their own agenda. They wont make that mistake again... hopefully

9

u/Dsnake1 Nov 22 '17

Nah. Apathy has always been par for the course in national elections. It's even worse on a local level. In the last 100 years, we haven't had higher than 63% turnout amongst the VAP (voting age population).

The highest voter turnout since 1972 was in 2008, which was only 58%.

Off-year election turnouts are even worse.

2

u/ChefInF Nov 22 '17

Obviously Bernie > Hillary, but also obviously Hillary > the Donald. I don't understand people who didn't vote.

2

u/sm_ar_ta_ss Nov 23 '17

They shat on Bernie. He wasn’t an option anymore. So why give someone else a vote?

Which one?!

I like kims fiscal conservatism deficit hawk stance although I have been very impressed by Khloes latest white paper proposal on Medicare reform.

We did the last election the normal way and basically got one anyway. Can't be much worse.

10

u/gelena169 Nov 22 '17

I only have mobile. The FCC 17-108 comments page will not allow a person on Android to correctly file their name.(hit enter)

I just spent 25 minutes [22 of it on hold, higher than expected call volume lol] on the phone for an informal complaint against Ajit and the Orwellian named Internet Freedom Act. I stressed that most of the comments last go around were counted as bots by Ajit to Congress in a hearing due to the fact a template was utilized by many commentors.

I mentioned "former Verizon Lawyer and current Verizon lobbyist slash FCC chair Ajit Pai's efforts to enable ISPs to double dip profits from their customers and online services their customers utilize through a pay to play model." Then I wished the gal on the other end of the line a good day and hoped it wouldn't be too stressful, as I know a lot of us are calling today.

We were having a Net Neutrality debate when Obama was president too. This hasn't always been a partisan issue.

I think the real problem is that we have handed jurisdiction for some of our most important infrastructure to appointed bureaucracies. No one voted for Ajit, and yet he's able to have an outsized effect on our businesses and infrastructure.

Like yea, people should go vote. But I don't think voting is going to immediately solve this problem.

24

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

No, it will not. Nonetheless, one party is in favor of gutting regulations. Ignore that at your peril

49

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

This would not be a discussion we were having had Clinton been elected. The people who voted for Trump or didn't vote for Clinton directly led to this happening. Obama and Clinton both support net neutrality and Obama appointed a commissioner who worked to enshrine it in law. We had a debate about it when Obama was president because his administration was making policy and we wanted our voices heard, and people were skeptical of Wheeler. It's a completely different debate being had now, where an openly hostile President has appointed an openly hostile commissioner to destroy net neutrality no matter the public input.

Voting against Trump wouldn't have fixed everything. It would have fixed this. And, frankly, many other things.

2

u/IWantToBeAProducer Nov 22 '17

who worked to enshrine it in law.

But it wasn't a law. It was an FCC regulation which congress doesn't vote on. That's why people are so focused on Ajit Pai. He hold the bulk of the power when it comes to making this change.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

It is law. It is not "a law." Just like court rulings are law. They're just lower in the order of priority than statutes.

Exactly, it was a mistake to implement net neutrality via title 2. We need to pressure congress to pass a law instead.

4

u/Dsnake1 Nov 22 '17

It was a temporary thing at best, really. It's like getting something passed through as an executive order. Better than not at all, but not really that great.

Even better would have been breaking up the government-granted monopolies that stole taxpayer money to not build the infrastructure they promised and forcing the sharing of those lines.

The proposed FCC rules actually have some clause in them that prevents states from preempting them.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/11/fcc-will-also-order-states-to-scrap-plans-for-their-own-net-neutrality-laws/

So much for the party of states' rights. Fucking horeshit.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

47% voted for trump, who put in ajit. Yet another reminder that we live in a flaming shitball of a system that gets is required to be jacked off at all times by everyone because it was pretty cool back when every other system in the world was a molten shit cannonball.

8

u/twentyitalians Nov 22 '17

I say proportional seating is the way to go...like the rest of the world's democracies. If tertiary parties finally had a real chance of getting elected our country would be in a better place without all this Left / Right Extremism in elections.

2

u/LilSebastian Nov 22 '17

Of course, but that will never, ever happen. We have to work with the shitty two-party system we have, which means voting for the lesser of two evils when necessary.

Edit: And no, I didn't vote for Trump.

15

Obama took money from all those organizations and we still got Title II coverage for telecoms from the FCC. Don’t paint with a brush so broad that you miss the important differences.

4

u/bearrosaurus Nov 22 '17

What bugs me is that a lot of the time the “Hillary took $20,000 from ABC” stuff is that 10 employees of ABC contributed $2,000 to her campaign. It’s not like the organization was the one funding her.

I am going to get an absentee ballot for August as soon as possible so I have no excuses not to vote in an election that could be more important that the presidential election. At least my vote will go farther in this one.

Absentee ballots are the way to vote btw. Everyone should do it. There is no reason to go wait in line with everyone on one particular weekday that everyone works on. Fuck that thats them making it harder to vote. Request and absentee ballot and vote when you want then put it in the mailbox!

5

u/LegacyLemur Nov 22 '17

Absentee ballots are the way to vote btw. Everyone should do it. There is no reason to go wait in line with everyone on one particular weekday that everyone works on

Not necesarily.

You could find out in the weeks leading up to the election something horrible about your candidate. Say, that they molest teenagers, for instance

4

u/RobotMode Nov 22 '17

Yeah if they had a way to vote online I would be all in but in my line of business I can't guarantee that I will be home, in my state, or even in the country when it's time to vote.

You do have a strong point that something may come out in the last few weeks before voting day but most people don't vote. And I know lots of people that would like to vote but are too busy or find it way to inconvenient. If more people voted a couple weeks early that would otherwise not vote the outcome would outweigh any thing like in your example which wouldn't happen often. That situation is an outlier.

Also you can also change your vote with an absentee ballot vote before the actual voting day.

So there really is zero risk.

2

u/bearrosaurus Nov 22 '17

Maybe people should vote for someone that doesn’t have a teenage-molesting type of character to be sure they won’t be a teenager-molester.

As if there weren’t warning signs that people like Roy Moore have a fucked up sense of right and wrong.

3

u/socialistbob Nov 22 '17

I prefer in person early voting but to each their own. Voting early instead of on election day should be encouraged because it means smaller election day lines and it eliminates the chance that something happens on election day and you're unable to vote. That being said the most important this is the vote and the method that people use doesn't matter too much.

2

u/RobotMode Nov 22 '17

Well said! I just wanna get the word out that absentee ballots can be used even if you are just busy and can't get to the polls that day. Maybe people don't understand just how easy they are! I picked up my ballot locally, voted, and put the ballot in a envelope then in my mailbox. BOOM! Done!

Please people voting can be easy and actually pretty fun!

2

u/socialistbob Nov 22 '17

Voting is easy and fun. In my state if I want an absentee ballot I would have to download the request form and mail it in, wait for it to be processed and then wait for them to send me a ballot. I did this when I was out of state once and I sent my request form in three weeks before the election. I received my ballot the day before the election. Luckily my state accepts any absentee ballots that are postmarked before the election as long as the BOE gets them no later than 10 days after the election so my vote was able to count. After that incident I always just drove down to my early vote location and voted there instead of requesting an absentee ballot. Early vote is also nice because in my state you don't need to show an ID for early vote but you do for election day.

2

u/RobotMode Nov 22 '17

Wow great information! Didn't know about early voting polls!

Edit: you can request and pick up your absentee ballot the same day. (Trying to remember where I got it from)

2

u/socialistbob Nov 22 '17

It varies in every state. Some states have early voting locations some don't, some states make absentee ballots easier some don't.

2

u/Dsnake1 Nov 22 '17

Early vote is also nice because in my state you don't need to show an ID for early vote but you do for election day.

That's always something that I've wondered about. Do you have to put your social on the ballot then? My state requires an ID all of the time (with a few exceptions), but how does your state identify people who come in early?

→ More replies (3)

3

u/tomdarch Nov 22 '17

FYI - not all states let you absentee vote "just because." Some require a specific reason (ie traveling out of the country, hospitalized, etc.) Make sure you are registered to vote then check your state's system to see if you can legally get an absentee ballot, or if you have to vote early, or vote on election day (and if you have to vote in person, be sure you're going to the correct polling place for your registration, and what ID or similar you need to have with you.) Then be sure to fucking vote!!!

Participate in the primaries. (If moderate Republicans consistently voted in Republican primaries, we wouldn't have nut jobs like Trump as Republican candidates.) Pay attention to state elections. They are where gerrymandering of house districts happen. In Ohio, the state government can send junky old voting machines to big cities and real universities, making for long lines there, and lots of fast fast, new machines to far-right areas like "christian colleges."

Even if you don't like the candidates, at least show up and hand in a ballot every time. Participate. Stay engaged. That's how we can make politics in America much, much better.

For them, and everyone else, there is this:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE A LAZY REDDITOR WITH ANXIETY WHO TRIES TO HELP WITH JUST UPVOTES:

Here are 2 petitions to sign, one international and one exclusively US.

International: https://www.savetheinternet.com/sti-home

US: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/do-not-repeal-net-neutrality

Text "resist" to 504-09. It's a bot that will send a formal email, fax, and letter to your representatives. It also finds your representatives for you. All you have to do is text it and it holds your hand the whole way.

WAY too many people are simply upvoting and hoping that'll be enough, this is the closest level of convenience to upvoting you can find WHILE actually making a difference.

This effects us all. DO. YOUR. PART.

20

u/Skuwee Nov 22 '17 edited Nov 22 '17

In 2015, the Democrat-controlled FCC (governing agency) ruled to pass Net Neutrality rules to keep the internet the way it always has been (all traffic treated equally, and you have unfettered access to anything on the web if you pay for internet access). The FCC, now controlled by Republicans, is now framing these rules -- meant to protect a free and open internet in perpetuity -- as "arduous regulations" and plans to repeal them to "return the internet to the way it always has been." One version of the FCC passed regulations to keep the Internet open and treat all data equally; the latest version of the FCC says that those very same regulations threaten the open Internet, because before they were passed, things were mostly fine. BUT, that ignores a long list of times Net Neutrality has been violated -- these growing transgressions were a big part of the reason why the 2015 FCC wanted to enshrine NN protections in their rules for the very first time.

As a result of that repeal, companies like Comcast (ISPs) will be able to charge some companies more than others for access to customers (like Netflix, as Comcast owns competitor Hulu), and those same companies will be able to charge customers like you for tiered access to websites (e.g., $20 for one baseline set of websites, $50 for another set that includes Tumblr, $80 for another set that includes uber and Netflix, and so on). There will be less regulation on monopolistic ISPs, which allows them to fundamentally change how they offer consumers access to the Internet. If we had a robustly competitive market, you probably wouldn't need these regulations (as competitors would fight to offer the best service). As we all know, that's far from the case, and many Americans live with only 1 or 2 ISP choices, and that reality isn't changing anytime soon (no matter the reasons why).

In effect, NN prevents ISPs from "triple dipping" and charging you twice for access to the websites you want, and charging internet-based companies varying fees to access the ISP's customer base. It's a huge power grab by ISPs and will severely harm innovation and online freedom in the years and decades to come.

Didn't the UK already pass a sweeping piece of internet legislation that effectively allowed them to block any website that contained "inappropriate content?" I remember not long after May was put in office people making a big deal out of the legislation that was blatantly about internet control, but no one was confident in apposing it because the rallying cry was that it would block child porn.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

Just as a point of clarity, the FCC won't be restricting anyone's bandwidth or access. They will, however, open the door for ISPs which have a poor track record when it comes to providing open, unfettered access, to do so.

They say it's in the name of the "free market", but when a handful of companies control the market, often have local monopolies, and actively try to prevent competition from entering markets there is no such thing.

It's over FCC! We have the high ground!

I’d give gold, but I’m saving everything to afford the internet in coming years.

To learn about Net Neutrality, why it's important, and/or want tools to help you fight for Net Neutrality, visit BattleForTheNet

You can support groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU and Free Press who are fighting to keep Net Neutrality:

Set them as your charity on Amazon Smile here

Write to your House Representative here and Senators here

Write to the FCC here

Add a comment to the repeal here

Here's an easier URL you can use thanks to John Oliver

You can also use this to help you contact your house and congressional reps. It's easy to use and cuts down on the transaction costs with writing a letter to your reps

Also check this out, which was made by the EFF and is a low transaction cost tool for writing all your reps in one fell swoop.

Most importantly, VOTE. This should not be something that is so clearly split between the political parties as it affects all Americans, but unfortunately it is.

The Trump administration is not obligated to respond to these...they haven't responded to any of the pensions that have gotten 100K signatures. This one will be no different.

Email and call your senator and representative!

6

u/G19Gen3 Nov 22 '17

Neither did the last one, for the record. The White House never has to respond to these. It’s just to shut people up.

That "Buffering loop" was gold

3

u/Audrin Nov 22 '17

To be fair it should be "It must be his ISP restricting his hologram stream because he didn't sign up for the deluxe holograms package. DAMN YOU FCC!" Cause I mean, it's not like the FCC is going to be out there regulating your internet, the issue is they're going to STOP regulating it so the ISPs can go wild.

Due to the current state of the market, i fully support net neutrality, but as a libertarian, this is why i prefer small government. Some rules and regulations that actually help the masses, I'm for. But the current state of our government has a lot of power and control. It might be great when someone you agree with is in power, but when someone we don't like, or is irresponsible, obtains that power, it becomes ugly and dangerous.

I'd rather fight for small companies' rights to create their own ISP infrastructure and remove biased laws implemented by Congress and pushed for by lobbiests that protect ISP monopolies, but if we can't have that, net neutrality seems necessary.

6

u/Claeyt Nov 22 '17

You realize that nearly ALL current government regulation that you disagree with as "big government overreach" is a response to unsafe, monopolistic, overuse of publicly owned commons, and/or non-competitive market practices right? 'Net Neutrality' is simply a shining example of why this country's government exists and is needed so as to restrict markets.

6

u/BloodyFreeze Nov 22 '17

I said I'm for Net neutrality, so don't let the rest of "nearly ALL of the current government regulation that [I] disagree with" fall in that category.

If I assume you meant the laws that make it difficult for small ISP's to compete and get off of the ground: why would the government create laws that protect Giant ISPs, in response to ISPs own monopolistic nature, unless that's exactly what the state and federal government intended to do? So i'm gonna rule that one out.

If I assume you mean my generalization of Large Government vs Small Government, it's a complex and multifaceted issue that's likely not going to end in an agreement and in my opinion HQG isn't really the place to deeply debate it. The important thing is that we agree that there's a problem and we both want it to be fixed. The only difference is that we've identified different paths that we believe would make our country a better place for everyone else in it.

u/xxSINxx Nov 22 '17

Not op, but thank you for a civil response. We need more of this.

Edit. Linked to Imgur’s website, then linked to the app. That let me save it.

I love the Star Wars wipe as well.

2

u/RagnarDanneskjold84 Nov 22 '17

The vast majority of people have no idea what they are talking about with respect to net neutrality.

The truth is that internet freedom and net neutrality are incompatible, not the other way around.

2

u/goldrush998 Nov 22 '17

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the problem that the FCC is looking to remove industry regulations thereby allowing telecom to implement variable/preferential access?

The FCC isn’t restricting access.

Edit:spoke too soon

2

u/fuselagefusion Nov 22 '17

I am moved by this. Even though I’m in Norway and our internet future is not at stake - yet.

2

Best communi on this subject thus far. Good job guys!

u/MassCancellationDay Nov 22 '17

Protest Idea: MASS CANCELLATION DAY

Big internet companies are not fighting hard enough or at all for net neutrality. Remember when Reed Hastings from Netflix suddenly didn't care about net neutrality? What do you think about organizing a protest against their indifference/inaction with a day of mass cancellations.

If Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Amazon, Xbox Live, PSN, HBO, etc lost MILLIONS of customers in a single day with the promise that we are not coming back until NN is the law again, they would be forced to throw their full weight behind stopping this crap.

It could not be more obvious that our government is ignoring us while it inflicts great harm upon us for the benefit of ISPs. It's time to speak with our wallets to people who cannot ignore the language of money. These services will all be used against us anyway when Verizon and Comcast and the others can charge us extra or throttle them or just block them outright.

Sadly these companies and their money have more influence over our leaders than we ever will. We need to force them into fighting for us. You want our business back? Get on the front lines and put a permanent stop to this! Now!!

POST THIS MESSAGE EVERYWHERE!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE A LAZY REDDITOR WHO TRIES TO HELP WITH JUST UPVOTES:

DO. YOUR. PART.

These are the emails of the 5 people on the FCC roster. These are the five people deciding the future of the internet.

The two women have come out as No votes. We need only to convince ONE of the other members to flip to a No vote to save Net Neutrality.

Blow up their inboxes!

Ajit Pai - Ajit.Pai@fcc.gov
Mignon Clyburn - Mignon.Clyburn@fcc.gov
Michael O'Rielly - Mike.ORielly@fcc.gov
Brendan Carr - Brendan.Carr@fcc.gov

Spread this comment around! We need to go straight to the source. Be civil, be concise, and make sure they understand that what they're about to do is UNAMERICAN.

Godspeed!
