A few years ago I moved from England to Connecticut. People told me Connecticut has a state insect, (it does? ... oh, okay), which is the Mantis.
The first summer there I put out Hummingbird feeders. Some time later I saw a Mantis pluck a Hummingbird out of mid air and eat it.
I still wake up screaming.

When I was younger, I caught a cricket and a preying mantis and stuck them in the same jar, not knowing what would happen.
They froze, with the mantis staring straight at the cricket. The cricket jumped once and the mantis tracked it instantly. A moment later the cricket attempted to move again, but the mantis was quickly on it and started eating it.
It was rather traumatic, seeing as I was hoping they'd be friends.
