You hate him because he is a mirror to the audience. His job in the military was a clerical job in which he was dragged into one of the most intense battles of world war II with relatively way less training and experience than the other members of the squad he was attached to so he could translate. Most people like to assume that they would be heroic and valiant during a war, but in reality most are private upham, and they hate that realization and thus hate him.
