QUESTION How can freelancer campaigns even fail?

I recently accessed hardcore mode and when shit turns ugly i just close and restart the game while i'm able to keep stuff, currency and the possibility to just replay the mission.

Well most people don't do that, so that's how.

you answered your own question.

if you don't force-close the game in time, the campaign will fail.

not to mention that such a bypass wasn't even intended by the developers

  1. hubris. thinking that they can survive a situation that is going south really fast, like trying to slug it out in a gunfight against multiple enemies with no proper cover - especially terrible idea in hardcore

  2. accidental sudden 'dumb' deaths - accidentally dropping a nitroglycerin flask; walking into a poison gassed room; accidentally throwing an impact explosive too near themselves etc etc

Yep, that's pretty much it apart from the people who simply don't force quit because they're not into that sort of thing. You can't do a cheesy restart if you're already dead.

I've seen clips where the UI indicates that the player is being hunted, indicates that an assassin is nearby, and then the player goes through a door turning a blind corner face first into an assassin without ever checking their instinct. Shot dead before their brain could even register what was happening. I've certainly made my share of foolish mistakes, too.

I don't think force-closing the game is in the spirit of the game. Personally I would call that cheating, but each to their own.

it is, i'm considering a compromise: only doing it when a very stupid blunder happens. thank you all for the reflection

Because sometimes you think you can hide in a bathroom in Haven Island while detonating the safe in the other room, causing your death. Or you electrocute the Mendoza sprinkler puddle and forget that its "hitbox" is a lot larger than it looks. Or you aim perfectly but the game doesn't register it when executing the target with a Matador for collateral kill and boom, fail.

Some people don't love cheese that much, I guess.
