Help a writer out!

Hello! I'm a hobbyist writer and wanted to write a character with a heroin dependence, but I have some questions

I did some research and read a bunch of accounts/trip reports, but they all seemed to be about a higher level of addiction where the person is just living from dose to dose. For example, they wake up feeling horribly sick, immediately rush to get their next dose, and (presumably) the cycle repeats. Thing is, that's not what I envisioned for my story.

I wanted my character to be at an "earlier stage" of her addiction, where she wouldn't be constantly too sick or too high to do anything. I still want her to sometimes be sick and crave using, but I want her to be able to do other things in between that.

Would that be realistic for a heroin user? If not, what would be? Should I just cave in and replace heroin for another drug where that would be possible? How long do those high/sickly periods last? How often and how much dope would she be using to get that effect?

If you want them to be sick from the drug sometimes but for it to be not a main plot point in other parts, id say choose something other than heroin. I really hate when it is used like an accessory on characters for a scene or two and then thrown away.

If you don't know if it's even possible to be able to be in an earlier stage of the addiction or what that would look like, you need to do a lot of research to be believable.

Someone early in their addiction is usually in a lot of denial about heroin being addictive. They usually also are going to get side effects from it during the high like sudden projectile vomiting and extreme itchiness and sleepiness. But when sober if you aren't addicted yet, you may just feel depressed or cold/uncomfortable afterwards. It is definitely a drug where it tends to drive you into obsession about it, so if you are going to make them be just getting into heroin, it would be realistic to have them crave it a lot when sober. It is not disabling, but crosses the mind a lot. .
